I Believe in Being a Top 20

As you have already seen, this video replicates that found in our Richmond Elementary March Update. Through the Eyes of a Kindergartner: First Day of School is the video clip shared at Kindergarten Roundup for all of our newest 2018-2019. Spring brings an opportunity for us to reflect on the 'Why' we are here, the 'Why' we do what we do every day, the 'Why' we matter to our children. Like Simon Sinek, author of Start with Why, we believe in a bright future and our ability to build that future together. We began our school year focusing on the belief that ROCORI's Richmond Elementary Team is dedicated to overcoming obstacles along the path to our students' success. Team Richmond has impacted our students both academically and emotionally since the first day of school. We greet our students each day with smiles, hugs, high fives and fistbumps. We make relationships and personally know each child we are fortunate to work with. Reflect on your role in student success since the first day of school. Be it in teaching, serving homemade rolls with a smile, offering to help find a mitten in lost and found, assisting in research or homework, cleaning up a mess with a child, being a mystery reader or sharing a passion with a child, you are the core for student success at school. Parents trust us to do what's best for their children, to care for them and help them achieve success. We accept the mission wholeheartedly, working as a team to instill a love of learning in a safe and welcoming environment. As we look ahead to the last three months of school, what are your goals? What impression and new knowledge do you want our students to take with them when they leave for summer break? Knowing where our students are and understanding where they need to be helps us focus on our goal of doing what's best for kids. Why? Because we believe in our students and their futures.

To Family Group 18 and each of you, thank you for welcoming our new student with open arms and encouraging words he so desperately needed on his first day and throughout this week! Thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!

Reading is Our Super Power!

This week we continue to focus on our World's Best Workforce reading goals with emphasis on the Reading Pillar Vocabulary. According to the RtI Network Article Classroom Reading Instruction That Supports Struggling Readers: Key Components for Effective Teaching, for students to learn to read well they must a) understand how sounds are represented by print and be able to apply this understanding to read and spell words, b) practice reading enough to become fluent readers, c) learn new vocabulary words, and d) learn to self-monitor when reading to make sure what they read makes sense and to correct their own errors. An essential component of reading instruction is teaching strategies when reading difficult words. In the article, Denton and Hocker (2006) are cited placing emphasis on a three-part strategy for students trying to read difficult words: "Look for parts you know, sound it out, and check it." With the emphasis we've placed on phonics and phonemic awareness over the past few weeks, looking for parts students know and sounding out the parts they don't flow naturally into conversations. Look for more Pillars-based strategies in weeks to come!
