Exceptional Students
Dear Atholton Families,
School or no school tomorrow? – that is the question. A full day off, a delay, or start on-time? The question going through everyone’s mind this Sunday evening. Whatever the decision, please be mindful that after school activities may be impacted tomorrow afternoon if we do have school.
I continue to be amazed and in awe of the talent of the students here at Atholton. Last week, junior Liza Goldberg had the honor to present at the Maryland State Department of Education Ceremony in Honor of Gifted and Talented Education. Liza, the first student ever asked to speak at this event, presented on the research she is currently engaged in at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Liza did an outstanding job and served as an example of the great things taking place in our gifted and talented program.
For the past few weeks, counselors have met with students to discuss course selections for next year. As these meetings come to an end, we will begin finalizing numbers for next year’s schedule and begin to make tough decisions on which courses will run and which will be canceled.
Lastly, I strongly believe that we should encourage and support our students who are civically engaged. That is to say, who volunteer to support causes that help others. Junior Mariana Lennon is participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign. During these next seven weeks (ending March 9, 2019), she will be raising funds to help pay for research toward a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families who are struggling with these diseases. Here is how you can help:
- Make donations at LLS website: https://events.lls.org/md/MDSoY19/mlennon
- Share her message with your contacts via email or social media
- Donate a silent auction item that can be used for the Grand Finale Gala auction
- Help her secure a corporate sponsorship (Sponsorships start at $2500 and sponsors receive Gala benefits)
Wishing everyone a fantastic week and Happy Valentine's Day!
Warmly,
Robert A. Motley
