Student Learning Objective (SLO)
"A Student Learning Objective (SLO) is a measurable, focused, academic-centered goal that describes what students should know or be able to do at the end of an interval of instruction" (Google Drive. (1999, December 31). Retrieved September 28, 2018, from https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/recent).
There is a two-fold advantage to using SLOs; they provide a way for teachers to measure students' growth while also improving their own instructional practice.
The Process:
1. Identify the area of student need
-Review various data available
2. Create the SLO
-Assess student knowledge of the SLO
-Complete SLO template
3. Review & Approve the SLO
-Submit the SLO template and score sheet for approval
-If denied, feedback will be provided for revision
4. TEACH!
-Monitor student growth as it pertains to the SLO
-Review and assess
5. Review & Score the SLO
-Score the post-instruction assessment
-Record data on Summary Sheet
-Submit complete SLO Score Sheet(s) and Summary Score sheet
Please understand that the SLO process in ongoing as well as the training that goes with it.
Here is a sample SLO:
"Without prompting, students will use appropriate graphic organizers and brainstorming tools to plan and organize writing that leads to a thorough and well-sequenced first draft." (4th grade)
The SLO addresses an area of focus (writing), and a skill focus.
Don't panic! This may seem confusing and/or daunting. We are going to ease our way into it, and we will provide you with more information and training beginning at our faculty meeting on Wednesday.
Writing Samples Due Soon!

Assignments vs. Assessments
Along this vein of thought, you may want to discuss with your student-athletes the importance of staying on top of their grades. This last six weeks was, for many, their first experience with "no pass-no play" rules. This last grading period for some was probably an eye-opener.
