The Tohickon Golden Eagle

February 2015

Dear Tohickon Families,

We have reached the mid-point of the 2014-2015 school year. Typically, as we approach this point in the year, we begin to think about the first days of spring and the warmer weather that is on the horizon. As we move into the second half of this school year, we will be doing so without two teachers that have been with Tohickon and the Central Bucks School District for a very long time. Mrs. Ricki Wittmer and Ms. Joanne Konek are retiring. Ms. Konek's last day was January 30th and Mrs. Wittmer's last day will be February 6th. Their impact on our school and our students cannot be measured. They will be greatly missed! However, this is an exciting time for them and we truly wish them the best of luck as they move ahead with the next phase of their lives.

Mrs. Wittmer is a ninth grade Learning Support teacher at Tohickon. She has been at Tohickon since its opening in 2002, and in the Central Bucks School District since 1983. Mrs. Wittmer has been a key leader at Tohickon. She has been the Special Education Facilitator and the Student Council Advisor for many years. Mrs. Wittmer has always taken pride in Tohickon and the connection that the school has with the community. Mrs. Wittmer's most important contribution, however, has been her dedication and devotion to her students. Mrs. Wittmer has always done what she felt was best for her students and the students in the building.

Ms. Konek is a seventh grade English teacher. Ms. Konek, like Mrs. Wittmer, has been at Tohickon since the beginnning. Ms. Konek began her teaching career in Central Bucks School District in 1976. Prior to coming to Tohickon, Ms. Konek spent 26 years at Central Bucks West as an English teacher. Ms. Konek always put her students first and worked to maintain a positive environment in her classroom. Students that have had Ms. Konek speak very highly of her and are always able to share fond memories of their experiences while in her presence.

We will greatly miss Mrs. Wittmer and Ms. Konek! I know that they are very sad to be leaving but, on the flip side, are very excited about beginning this next chapter in their lives. Please join me in saying goodbye and wishing them well as they make the transition into retirement.

Mr. Kevin Marton, Principal

Community Service - Relay for Life Kickoff

It's Relay season! Tohickon officially begins our 12th year of supporting the American Cancer Society on Tuesday, February 3rd. At this assembly for our 8th and 9th grade students, our guest speakers, all cancer survivors, will share their stories with students and motivate them to get involved in the fight against cancer. Students will form teams of 4-14 individuals, select a team captain, and register online. All permission slips and the $10 registration fee is due to homeroom teachers no later than Wednesday, February 18th. For more information, check out the Relay page on our district website.

Later this month, our 7th grade students will have an opportunity to also help in the fight against cancer by collecting items for Hope Lodge. Located next to Fox Chase Cancer Center, this facility is a home away from home for patients that need to travel long distances to receive outpatient treatment in any of the Philadelphia-area hospitals. Students will be collecting items such as HE laundry detergent, paper towels, and dryer sheets. More information about this opportunity will be headed home near the end of the month.

Tohickon Cheerleaders to Hold Annual Carnation Sale

The Tohickon cheerleaders will be holding their annual carnation sale in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The cheerleaders will be selling carnations at all lunch periods beginning on Monday, February 2nd, and ending on Tuesday, February 10th. Students may purchase a carnation for $1.00 or a dozen for $10.00. All carnations that are purchased will be delivered on Thursday, February 12th, during resource. The Golden Eagle cheerleaders thank you for your support and wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Tohickon Geography Bee

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. On December 2nd, over 600 students at Tohickon, in 7th and 8th grade, took part in the preliminary round of the Geography Bee. When the day ended the over 600 students had been narrowed down to 50 students. The following Wednesday, these 50 students competed in the semi-final round to determine the 10 finalists for the Geography Bee finals. The Tohickon School Finals were held on the stage in the auditorium on January 16th. All 10 finalists represented themselves well, answering many rounds of questions correctly. In the end, seventh grader Adam Zortea, from Team Summit, emerged at the 2015 Tohickon Geography Bee Champion. Adam will now take the State Qualifying Test to see if he moves on to the State Competition. We wish him the best of luck.

Wellness Update

After months of searching, we’ve finally found a company that will make us great tasting pretzels that meet the nutritional guidelines. The Philadelphia Pretzel Factory, in Lahaska, has a fantastic recipe for whole-wheat pretzels! We distributed samples to students a few weeks back, to gauge whether or not they would sell. We had an overwhelming positive response and were able to begin selling them last week, on January 21st. The pretzel sales will be every Wednesday, at dismissal. Due to the cost of the special ingredients, the pretzels will be sold for $0.75 each. All proceeds benefit the Tohickon Wellness Committee.

Del Val University Connections

On Wednesday, February 3rd, Mrs. Fox and Mr. Dudley will be representing Tohickon at a Community Service Partner Fair. This is the next step in trying to recruit DelVal students to collaborate with us on projects like the Garden Club, Science Club, Landscaping and maintenance of our Outdoor Classroom.

Wellness Days

Recently the Wellness Committee sponsored a Souper Bowl for the faculty, where all of the teachers were able to gather to enjoy homemade soups. This was a great community building activity for our staff. On Friday, February 6th, we will be having a Student Wellness Day/Popcorn Sale. The popcorn will be made right here at Tohickon and benefit the Wellness Committee, in order to provide for more Student Days. Bags of caramel-flavored and regular popcorn will be sold for $1.00 per bag.

Concussion Testing for Ninth Grade Spring Sports at CB East and CB West

CB East Concussion Testing- February 18th

CB West Concussion Testing- February 23rd

The concussion testing will take place right after school. Ninth grade students taking the test will take the sports bus to the high schools for the testing.

From the Nurse's Office

Because head injuries and concussions may impact your child’s ability to learn, please contact the school nurse if your child is injured. Please contact, Colleen Fox, School Nurse, 267-893-3315 for more information regarding the CBSD Concussion Protocol.

Parents should provide a physician note if students require crutches, wheelchairs, elevator keys, physical education excuses, or other accommodations while in school. Please know that we want to support your child as he/ she recuperates.

Your child is measured for height and weight yearly as mandated by the Pennsylvania School Health program. Height, weight, age and gender were used to determine his/her Body Mass Index (BMI) and percentile. This screening should be completed by late February on all Tohickon students. Your child’s results are available on the Parent Portal. If you do not have access to a computer and would like a paper copy sent home, please call your school nurse with this request.

Vision screening by the school nurse is also mandated. If your child fails the screening, the school nurse will contact you and send you a physician referral in the mail. Please return the completed referral to the school nurse if applicable.

Scoliosis screening will take place for all 7th grade students on March 11th. If you do not want your child to participate in this screening please provide a note or e-mail her

School dental exams are scheduled for Friday March 27. Seventh grade students who have not provided a copy of the private dental report are invited to have a dental screening by the school dentist. Please return to the school nurse the school dental permission recently mailed home if applicable.
