Good luck to our elementary OBOB team who is competing tomorrow, March 9, at Stephenson Elementary from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Counselor's Corner
Skyline student attendance has been amazing this year. Recently, inclement weather and illness have taken a huge toll on our school-wide attendance. As a mom, I completely understand that there are things outside of our control determining student attendance. However, as an educator, I also know how much attendance impacts student learning. When students miss school, they cannot perform at the same level as peers who have received instruction. They miss out on learning new routines and developing comfort with the structures in the classroom. Multiple studies have identified attendance as young as kindergarten as a key predictor for graduation. We appreciate families making such a fantastic effort regarding attendance this year. Please remind your student to wash their hands and get lots of sleep so we can end the year strong.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Amy Gervais

IB IN ACTION!
Ms. Barton’s Inquiry / Debate Middle School Elective
Middle School Inquiry Teams have embarked on projects that range from creating and posting rules for the Gaga Ball Court to teaching a foreign language beginner lesson to a K-5 class. One Inquiry Team have taken on the task of dismantling an XBox Original to learn more about the components inside. The inquiry began with an interest in computers and the question, 'What parts of a computer or Xbox are recycled?" An Xbox was procured and it took several days to unscrew, separate and pull apart all the components. These components are now ready to be affixed to a display board. This display will appear somewhere in the school in the coming weeks complete with information about each component such as what was its function within the machine, what material it is and is that material recycled when it ends up in E-Waste. Look for this interesting display soon to learn more about how game devices are recycled and what the components inside look like!
On Friday March 15 we will be celebrating the IB Learner Profile of a Communicator. We have an AMAZING community of Communicators! To demonstrate being a Communicator one:
“Understands and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others”
TAG Information
PPS is excited to host a TAG Parent Series focused on what it means to be gifted. The series will be facilitated by Dr. Ruby Dawn Lyman, Coordinator of Pacific University’s Talented and Gifted Specialization Program and teacher in Hillsboro School District.
The first parent presentation will take place on Tuesday, March 12th at the Blanchard Education Service Center (BESC), located at 501 N. Dixon (the WyEast conference room on Lower Level 2) from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., with 7:30 – 8:00 pm. for questions and social time . The session is for adults only as there will be no childcare at this meeting. The first topic will be the Characteristics of Giftedness. We will survey parents at this session to find out what additional topics would be of most interest for future sessions. The remaining sessions will be held on April 9th, and May 7th. As of now, these sessions will also be held in WyEast at the BESC.
This is a wonderful opportunity to interact and meet other parents of TAG students in PPS. We appreciate the opportunity to bring Dr. Lyman to PPS with such short notice and look forward to her sharing valuable information to our PPS TAG community.
Skyline Families who are interested in applying to Access, the Application is now available. You can find the application on the TAG website on the front page and in the ACCESS link on the TAG page as well. It is also on the ACCESS school website. The process guide can also be found on both the school’s website and the TAG website under ACCESS. Parents, you must also fill out a SchoolMint application. That link is also on the ACCESS application. If a child has already completed the ACCESS Application and was included in the lottery for the years 17-18 and 18-19, they only have to do a short form, which is on the ACCESS application, and they will still need to do the SchoolMint application. They do not need to go through the whole ACCESS application process.
A reminder that students applying for ACCESS must have a 99% in one of the 3 areas of TAG identification; Intellectual, Math and/or Reading AS WELL AS a demonstrated need for an alternative program. These indicators are also in the ACCESS Process Guide found on the ACCESS school site and the TAG Dept website. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any support.

Successful School Survey
Successful School Survey
IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ
Due to the late starts and no school the survey has been extended!
Skyline Staff have been working hard this year within our school Climate Team. We have been streamlining school wide behavior and expectations, promoting positive incentives with our Golden Eagle Tickets and weekly drawings and celebrating students who demonstrate the IB Learner Profile traits at our monthly school wide Assemblies. Now we would love to hear from the Community as to what you see and how you feel the climate of our school is.
Please take a moment to fill out the Successful Schools Survey. Currently our district-wide response rate for families is 32% and Skyline is only at 44%. Your feedback is important and will only help us improve on policies and procedures within Skyline. You can go to this link and complete the survey from here as well. surveys.panoramaed.com/portlandor/ppsfamily. You will then select Skyline School to complete the survey. You can also use the PPS Family Survey Access Flier-All Languages.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We are hoping for as much participation as possible.

6:00 p.m.
PTA’s general membership meeting has been moved up a week to March 14 to accommodate the Spring Concert (which will happen on March 21). Please join us! Principal Aguirre is hoping to discuss the math MAPS assessment, an important test for parents and guardians to understand given that our school is now collecting and using data, beginning in kindergarten, so as to track students and ensure they are meeting or exceeding expectations. Concerned about test scores and grades? PLEASE JOIN US! If Ms. Aguirre needs to reschedule, she will speak instead at the April or May PTA general membership mtgs.

It’s time for Matching Donations!!
With the auction just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about matching donations.
What’s a matching donation, you ask? It is a monetary donation given by your employer to Skyline school that matches a charitable donation by you.
What is eligible for a matching donation? Any monetary donation to Skyline school with no goods or services received in return.
That means if you give cash, write a cheque, or raise a paddle at the auction and receive nothing in return, it is a charitable donation and eligible for a matching donation by your employer.
Here is a list of employers that we know match charitable donations:
Intel
Nike
Tektronix
Daimler
Wells Fargo
Baird Foundation
Legit Script
Planar Systems
Pacific Corp
If your employer matches donations and is NOT on this list, please reach out to the Foundation (erena.friedrich@yahoo.com) and let us know.
Skyline parents who work for Intel or Nike please note that you only have 90 DAYS from the date of your charitable donation to submit your receipts for the matching donation!!
We hope you come to the auction. We hope you have fun. We hope you give generously. :-)
If you do, DON’T FORGET to grab those matching donations!!
Sincerely,
Your friendly neighborhood Foundation
