MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS

Dear Fairview Families,

It is hard to believe that Spring Break starts after school today! Whether you will be staying home or traveling, I hope you and your family are able to enjoy some extra time to spend together. This past week went very well here at Fairview. While we still have some make-up testing to finish, most of our students have completed the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and the 5th grade Illinois Science Assessment (ISA). Students enjoyed some beautiful days outside for recess this week. Spring is definitely in the air! We capped off the week with today’s PTO Special Lunch, which was a great way to send students off on Spring Break.

Looking forward to the week after Spring Break, on Wednesday, March 30th, Thursday, March 31st and Friday, April 1st, Fairview students will participate in a 30 minute presentation delivered by Katherine Ciruelas, Fairview School Social Worker, to educate them in an age-appropriate way about the topic of childhood sexual abuse. These valuable presentations will teach students more about personal safety, safe vs. unsafe touches, safety steps to follow if someone breaks the touching rule, and good secrets vs. bad secrets. All District 57 Schools will participate in these presentations once again this school year in compliance with Erin’s Law, which mandates education about sexual abuse prevention for public school children in Illinois. All students will be included in the sexual abuse prevention programs unless a parent or guardian contacts me via email or phone to request that their child not participate (dophus@d57.org, 847-394-7320 x4012). When we return from break, students in 2nd grade will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on March 31st, April 1st and April 4th. The Cognitive Abilities Test is a computer-based test measuring verbal, non-verbal and quantitative abilities and is scheduled for forty-five minute sessions over three days. Student reports will be shared with parents once we have them. District 57 staff members analyze CogAT data in conjunction with other measures of student performance to identify high potential students in reading and math. If you have any specific questions about the CogAT, please contact your child’s teacher or reach out directly to me. Thank you for taking the time to read through today’s newsletter. PTO "READ-A-WAY" PROGRAM

Read-A-Way is a reading incentive program from the Fairview PTO partnership with Station 34 in Mount Prospect. Students have a chance to earn a free kids pizza every month by meeting their daily reading goals.

BIRTHDAYS

The Fairview PTO has a wonderful history of giving students a book for their birthday. For the 2021-2022 school year, they are continuing that tradition. If your child is celebrating a birthday this month or has celebrated a birthday since the beginning of this school year, please have them go onto ClassLink on their chrome book and go to the Birthday Book link or click on the graphic to access the link. They must choose a book that is on the Google document listing all the grade level books. Students who are learning from home can pick their birthday book up from the school.

Was you child's birthday in August, September, October, November, December or January and they haven't selected their birthday book yet? Make sure they go to ClassLink or click on the birthday cake to make their selection...don't forget to pick the tab for the appropriate grade level list.

CAPANNARI'S COOLEST SCHOOL CONTEST

Fairview School is once again participating in Capannari's Coolest School contest. Head on over to Capannari's on Monday, April 4th from 3:00pm-9:00pm to enjoy their delicious ice cream. 10% of all purchases will benefit Fairview School. Click here to find out more about this fun contest that involves 20 local schools.

STUDENT SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT PROCEDURE

The office's procedure for those times when you need to sign your child in or out of school has changed. We maintain an electronic sign-in/sign-out sheet in the office so all you have to do is drop your student off (if arriving late) and we will sign them in and get them down to their class. If you need to sign your child out, ring the doorbell, tell us who you are picking up, and we will send your student out the front door.

BUS RIDERS

Is your child a bus rider? Are there times when they will be picked up instead of riding the bus home at the end of the day? If so, it is important that the school office is aware if a student will not be riding the bus home. Please click on the bus for a handy form that you can fill out and send to school with your student. You can always email the front office and the teacher to let us know of an alternative end of day transportation plan.

Please send a copy of your child's COVID vaccination card to the health office after your child receives dose #2 of the COVID vaccine.

KEEP THE FRONT OFFICE INFORMED

When emailing your student's teacher regarding vacation plans, illness, doctor appointments, etc., please include the front office staff in your communication.

Also, please contact Fairview School’s office if your home/cell phone number, emergency contact numbers, or email address have changed.

If you have moved, please immediately contact the front office so we can update your student's records.

BE ALERTED WHEN BUS IS DELAYED...SIGN UP FOR BUS BULLETIN

Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion, train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise.
