District Calendar Updates
- Calendar updates
- Tuesday, March 19 - spring voting day - no school for students
Because many schools are used as polling locations, there is no school for students on voting days. - Monday, April 8 - solar eclipse - early release
For the first time since 1806, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Ohio at approximately 3 p.m. on April 8, 2024. To eliminate the safety concerns involved with students being dismissed during the eclipse, and to allow families to experience this historic event together, there will be an early dismissal of 1 p.m. for the elementary schools and 1:30 p.m. for the middle schools, high school and Burbank Early Childhood School. Thanks to the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, all UA Schools students and staff members will be receiving eclipse glasses through the district.

Gifted Identification Process
Gifted Identification Process for Creative Thinking Ability
2023-2024 Information for Parents and Guardians
School districts in Ohio are required to identify students who are gifted in creative thinking
ability. Creative thinking ability involves characteristics such as imaginative thinking, a sense of
humor, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
Identification of creative thinking ability is a two-part process that is defined by the Ohio
Department of Education and Workforce. Students are evaluated for both cognitive abilities and
creative characteristics. To be identified as gifted in creative thinking ability, students must
achieve a minimum score on a cognitive test such as the CogAT and a minimum score on a
state-approved creative thinking checklist.
In February, 2nd and 4th grade students who earned the required minimum score of 112 on the
CogAT in December will be evaluated further with the creativity section of the Scales for Rating
the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students. Classroom teachers will complete the
creativity scale for each of their students who earned the required CogAT score.
You will receive notification in March if your child is identified as gifted in creative thinking
ability. Although the Upper Arlington City School District does not provide formal gifted
services for students in elementary school who are gifted in creative thinking ability, this
information is useful for teachers and may help you to make decisions about enrichment
opportunities that are available in the community.
While our district is screening 2nd and 4th grade students for giftedness in creative thinking ability,
students, parents, and teachers may refer a student for evaluation of giftedness in creative
thinking ability at any grade level. If you have questions about this process, please contact your
school’s Gifted Intervention Specialist or Jeanne Beaver, Gifted Services Coordinator, at

Food Rescue/Reduction Program
Our focus for BOBCAT Day on January 8, 2024 is our broader community. The students will participate in various activities throughout the day focused on cooperation and how to help others in the community. One of the larger projects that will take place on BOBCAT Day will be making “kindness kits” that will be distributed to people without homes.
In conjunction with this project, we are starting a Food Rescue/Reduction Program at Barrington. This is a program that other schools in the district are doing with great success. The goal of this is to reduce the waste of food/beverages in our cafeteria, but also to help those in need. We are partnering with another organization, Heart to Heart, which will take these donations to three different shelters/food pantries.
On BOBCAT Day, the students will learn about this program as well as our composting program and will continue to have these discussions throughout the rest of the year. Below are key points we will cover and for you to reiterate these at home:
The program begins Tuesday, 1/16/24
Foods that can be donated:
Whole fruit with peels intact
Unopened food items
Unopened beverages
Foods that CANNOT be donated:
Items that have been opened
Expired items
Fruits or veggies that have been peeled
Bring home foods that you will eat after school or another day
Do NOT purchase items in the cafeteria to donate
Do NOT donate items if you are still hungry
COMPOST items that have been opened or partially eaten
We are excited to initiate this program at Barrington to show our students how we can have a great impact on those in our broader community. We appreciate your partnership and support with this program.

Spelling Bee Recap
A big congratulations to the almost 100 brave student spellers who participated in this year’s Scripps School Spelling Bee, and a thank you to the parent volunteers who made this tradition possible. A special shout out to our 1st and 2nd grade finalists who competed on January 11th and joined our older spellers on January 18th: Elanor Liu, Alice Davis, Smera Khanal, Mira Schumacher, and Kate Stonebrook. A special congratulations to our winner, Cohen Bird, and runner-up, Zoey Nolan. These stellar spellers had quite the showdown in our final rounds. Cohen will have an opportunity to qualify for further rounds in the Scripps Spelling Bee, and we wish him luck.
Barrington Book: James & The Giant Peach
We are looking forward to kicking off Barrington Book! The Cover to Cover orders will be delivered to the classrooms for distribution to students by 2/6/24. You did not need to purchase the book from Cover to Cover to participate. If you own a copy of James And The Giant Peach or grabbed one from the library, just follow the schedule below – it’s that simple. Our first reading week will be 2/12/24 - 2/18/24. Throughout each reading week, students will have a chance to answer trivia questions about the assigned chapters. They can answer the questions via a link in this weekly email or at a table in the media center or cafeteria. Our first trivia questions will post in this email on 2/11 and be available for students to answer during their lunch period in the cafeteria through 2/22. At the end of each week, two winners will be picked and announced on BTV on Fridays. We will have a Grand Family Prize given out during movie night on the evening of 3/1. Please reach out to our Barrington Book Co-Chairs, Courtney McBride (courtneymcbride17@gmail.com) or Becky Trapp (beckyctrapp@gmail.com) with questions!

Bobcat Social – 02/29/24
Excitement is building up for our upcoming Bobcat Social, and we've received fantastic questions about the dress code. The short answer is that we are all about a "Come as You Are" vibe – wear what makes you comfortable. But we get that sometimes a little direction is nice. So here's the scoop on Casual Cocktail for our adults-only night out:
For the Gents:
Feel free to wear a sweater, or elevate the style with a blazer paired with jeans or your favorite pants. Casual meets classy – that's the look!
For the Ladies:
Keep it chic and comfortable! Opt for pants paired with a stylish top for an elegant touch, or go for the classic combo of a skirt or dress.
Remember, the key is to feel fabulous and have a blast. Whether it's jeans and a blazer or a cute dress, you do you! Grab your tickets, secure a sponsorship, and let's make this night unforgettable!
