3rd Grade ELPAC Testing Week
Identifying students who need help learning English is important so they can get the support they need to do well in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, and other subject areas in school. The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
If you need a reminder of your child's appointment day/time, please call the McCabe Office at (760) 335-5210.

Intervention Blocks
Caring for Technology
Through the first quarter of Distance Learning, we have had a significant number of district-issued Chromebooks and tablets damaged and brought in for repair. District-issued devices are intended for school-use only.
Students are responsible for the general care of device they have been issued by the school. Devices that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the tech support office located in the McCabe District Office on the Corfman campus for an evaluation of the equipment. Please see Chromebook Care and Security for more tips and suggestions.
General Precautions:
The device is school property and all users must follow the Acceptable Use Policy.
- Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the device to prevent damage
- Devices must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, labels, or any other physical alterations
- Devices must never be left in an unlocked car or any unsupervised area. Devices should also not be left visible in a locked or unattended car
- Devices must never be left in a location susceptible to extreme cold or hot weather
- Moisture is damaging to devices; keep it out of water and humid locations

COVID-19 Prevention Program in Preparation for the Reopening of Schools
As the public health conditions continue to improve, the McCabe Governing Board and Administration are working with staff on the planning and preparation for the reopening of schools. There are many uncertainties ahead, including a downturn in public health conditions that restrict reopening.
With many sources of information, and schools progressing at different rates, it is important for McCabe families to have information specific to McCabe. Expect to receive additional updates as the McCabe district advances through several stages that will eventually lead to in-person instruction for students.
At this time, there is no tentative date yet for the reopening of McCabe. The reopening will be phased in, prioritizing kindergarten students in the initial phase. The reality may be that, being so far into the 2020-2021 school year, time may not be sufficient to advance to additional phases.
COVID-19 Safety Plan
The COVID-19 Prevention Program is one of two important documents that schools are required to complete prior to the reopening of schools. The McCabe school board recently approved this document and all McCabe employees have participated in a training session of the contents.
The second required document, a COVID-19 School Guidance Checklist will be developed in the coming weeks. Together, these two documents will represent McCabe’s COVID-19 Safety Plan. When the Safety Plan is finalized, it will be submitted to the local public health department and to the state for a review process.
Thank you for your patience as we proceed through the reopening process. Please continue to follow all of the safety guidance to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.

Safe Schools for All Hub
The State of California continues to keep our parent community informed of ways to stay up on the latest information regarding COVID-19 and reopening in-person instruction for the 2020-2021 school year.
Please take a few minutes to visit the State of California's Safe Schools for All Hub launched as a one-stop shop for state guidance and resources on safely resuming in-person instruction. This hub provides the latest information for understanding the risks and benefits of educating children in the classroom, implementing safety plans, and gives parents the opportunity to voice feedback and concerns. Be sure to scroll down to the "What's New" portion of the page for the latest updates with new resources to support safe in-person instruction.
Another great source of information comes from The California Department of Public Health which released an update to its "COVID-19 and Reopening In-Person Instruction Framework & Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools in California, 2020–2021 School Year” on January 14th. This document consolidates content from other CDPH COVID-19 and school-related guidance and supersedes previous CDPH COVID-19 and Cal/OSHA school guidance.
CAASPP Summative Testing Updates
As of now, students from 3rd – 8th grade will need to take the CAASPP Summative Test at the end of the school year. The state allows for both in-person and remote testing. The McCabe Union Elementary School District will start reviewing our best options to be able to assess our students and will share that information with our parents over the next couple of months. Below is a link with Parent/Guardian Resources regarding the Smarter Balanced Summative Test. As more information becomes available, we will provide it via our weekly Newsletter updates.

Reminders During Distance Learning Instruction
Attendance and Presence in Class:
- Be punctual and in the waiting room.
- Be sure your child’s chair is comfortable, but size-appropriate. Use pillows to keep the child towards the front of the seat. Students must sit as if they were in class: no blankets, no cell phones, and no eating during instruction.
- Position your child’s chair with an appropriate background. Be mindful of family or pets behind the child that may be a distraction to other students.
- Remember … there is a group of 20-35 students in your home during online instruction. Please keep background noise and personal conversations to a minimum. Chromebook and tablet mics pick up even the softest of whispers.
·
Monitoring the Child:
- Remind your child that the camera lens should be open AT ALL TIMES DURING INSTRUCTION unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
- Assist your child with technology, but not with class work.
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep each night and a good breakfast each morning to help your child stay alert.
Tips for Zoom/Google Meet/Google Classroom:
- Students should be using their school accounts (through Clever or Google Classroom) to log into Zoom and Google Meet.
- If students are using a personal device where multiple accounts are logged in, they may receive an error message, or be unable to join or open files in Google Classroom. Please be sure all personal accounts are signed out and that their school account is the active account on the device if you are experiencing these issues.
- If issues persist with logins, please contact the Tech Support Hotline at (760) 335-5200.
