Notes from the Elementary School

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Starting Monday, September 28th we will begin early morning drop off. Families who need an early drop off option may bring their student(s) to school as early as 7:45 am. Early morning drop off will be in the MPR, located on the 10th floor. Due to capacity restraints, we ask that you do not use the early drop off option unless you are in true need of it.

Wow! We kicked the year off strong at BPCS with International Dot Day. The Dot, written by Peter Reynolds, is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe. Teacher, Terry Shay began this global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration back in 2009. At BPCS we used Dot Day to introduce our year long commitment to numbers (and fostering a love for mathematics) by doing math with dots and then creating our own lobby art installation inspired by Yayoi Kusama. “The dot is the basis of everything,” says Anita Walsh, artist in resident, “and a great starting point for our year of discover. Happy Dot Year! ”

We have begun going outside for recess this past week, and are in need of parent volunteers to serve as chaperons.

Recess usually happens at MetroTech Plaza off of Bridge Street from 11:15-12:45. K recess usually starts at 11:15 with grades 1 & 2 usually arriving around 12. Fort Greene Park trips will begin in October and go from 11:15 - 1pm. Even if you can only join us for a part of the time we would love to have your support, for either event. Please keep an eye out for the sign-up in your classroom's next update to volunteer.

After school is off to an amazing start! Classes are going great and our students are having loads of fun getting to know one another, learning new things, and participating in many activities.

Here are a few key reminders:

  • Friday, September 25th is your last day to add or drop classes. Add/Drop forms are available at the front desk and were also sent in your confirmation email.
  • Pick-up for after school students is on the 8th floor. Don't forget to sign your student(s) out at the front desk before picking up.
  • All add/drops must be made on the Add/Drop form and turned in to Kristin, or at the front desk. We are happy to discuss the changes via email but can’t accept emails as formal add/drop changes.

See you in after school!!!

We are excited to announce that our 2nd graders will have 8 weeks of swim lessons at the Dodge YMCA! Coach Marsigliano along with a few other BPCS staff members will be on hand to ensure our students are safe and feel comfortable in the water. We will ask for parent volunteers to assist us as we will walk to the YMCA from BPCS. More details soon to follow!

We have secured a licensed speech therapist, Alina Kaplan, who has already started to
provide service to your child as indicated on his/her IEP. Alina Kaplan is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing-Association. She is also certified as a
Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities. Alina comes with great experience working with young children in a preschool setting.

This year a DOE contracted counselor will be providing counseling to students whose IEP mandate this service. Tara Kreider and she is a NY Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She has worked in not-for-profit, home and school based settings and has extensive experience providing individual and group therapy. She also has experience providing counseling to students with IEPs in an elementary school.

We are working diligently with the DOE to find OT and PT providers who can service our students at our school. As we move forward, we will continue to update you all regarding these services.

Our first PTSO meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 29 at 6:00pm. We will gather in the gymnasium and will also provide childcare and pizza for school aged students. Please RSVP using the form below, so that we may plan accordingly for your students.
