A Message from the Administration
By Jacqueline Parks
During the week of April 1st, WCS will have the pleasure of hosting eight middle level students from China as part our collaborative work with Spiral International. Spiral International is an educational organization that promotes intercultural learning, understanding and relationships between schools in China and Vermont. The Chinese students will stay with middle level host families in Williston and attend school here for the week. Each middle level team will host 1-2 students. Some of our hopes for this collaboration include having our students develop a personal, global perspective on the world, gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture and interact with peers from across the world to build a greater understanding of our similarities and differences.
In addition to attending school, our Chinese visitors will have the opportunity to visit some Vermont sites and build a relationship with their host family. Various middle level students in Williston will join them in these experiences.
Another unique opportunity created by Spiral International is coming up in April. Some Williston students and teachers, along with other Vermont students and educators, have signed up to attend a 2-week trip to China. This trip, sponsored by Spiral International, will include spending 5-days in Chinese middle schools and visiting many of China’s historical sites. Our teachers will be modeling lessons for Chinese teachers that have a focus on active learning. They will also spend time in Chinese classrooms to gain an understanding of their teaching techniques.
Williston is excited to see what else this collaboration brings to us in the upcoming years. Our world is a very large, but very small place and by building connections amazing things will happen. We would like to thank our host families and middle level teams for welcoming these visitors to Vermont.

ABS and Mosaic Team Art News
During our clay project, Kindergartners formed and glazed flower tea-candle holders after a brief introduction to works by Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keefe. Some of these shiny and colorful pieces are currently on display at ABS. The children are now working on paper crowns to celebrate the coming of springtime. They will be looking at picture books about the wonders of spring and practicing patterns, cutting, folding and attachment techniques with our art intern, Emily Coffrin who is visiting from Johnson State College.
Grades 1 and 2 have also worked in clay, learning the “pinch” technique and “slip and score” method of attachment. They watched a wonderful video about world renowned potter, Maria Martinez. Most students made animals but we have a few wild and wooly monsters as well. They are now involved in a printmaking project with Emily. They have talked a bit about the significance of the evolution of print over time and are practicing patterns made of lines and shapes. The initial transfer of one’s image and the realization of the reverse nature of it is an exciting moment in the process.
Upon completion of beautiful collaborative murals which hang in their classrooms, Mosaic artists continue to build their skills in painting. They are creating images of animals in winter. The main objectives in this lesson are to deepen one’s understanding of “focal point” and how to blend light, medium and dark “values and tones” of colors for unity and to evoke feeling.
Please mark your calendars – the *ABS* Art Show is scheduled for Thursday, May 17, 2018, 6-8 pm.
Happy spring!
