What's Happening in 2nd Grade

Looking Ahead
Well, believe it or not, the beginning of March already brings us to the midpoint of the 3rd quarter.
As we are heading into the last few weeks before Spring, the second grade team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for making the Valentine Party such a success. We are all grateful for the continued support throughout the school year.
RECESS
Our weather and temperatures are very unpredictable so please keep in mind that the students do go outside as often as they can. Please send your child to school with the appropriate outerwear so they can enjoy the fresh air.

MATH
Students continue to use problem solving skills to solve 1 and 2 step story problems. We will use our measurement skills once again to estimate and measure many objects in standard units, inches and feet, as well as metric units, centimeters and meters. Students will compare measurements in different units and explain how they are related. Finally we will wrap up the month with data. Students will collect and use a variety of data to create different types of graphs. Students will create, as well as, interpret data in each type of graph.
Please continue to reinforce the practice of both addition and subtraction facts up to 20. Consistent practice = stronger fact fluency. Please encourage your child(ren) to regularly practice each week.
Unit 8 Home Connection
Unit 9
ELA
Language Arts
Students are reading informational texts, including biographies. They are learning how to determine the most important information as we read by creating organizers called mind maps. We will also analyze how informational texts are organized, including timelines and cause and effect. Students will learn to dig deeper in a text by rereading the same text, each time for a different purpose. This helps readers get beyond surface level understanding into more meaningful comprehension.
Writing
The focus for writing has shifted to opinion writing. Students are learning the difference between fact and opinion and sharing opinions about their favorite books, characters and beyond! This writing will teach them how to, not only form an opinion, but how to support their opinions with reasons and evidence, ultimately trying to persuade others about a variety topics ~ so look out! Their argument for getting another pet may just be getting stronger!!
