Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 08/30/16
A Message from the Leadership Team
Adult Education
What a fabulous two-three weeks of Fall classes we have had! We are currently in the 12th day of LWTC day-classes and the 5th day of evening-classes across all sites. A BIG THANK YOU to all support staff for nonstop registering, testing and guidance of students; we have over 1200 students currently enrolled. We also want to thank all of you who have been recruiting instructors by sharing the great things we do. We currently have 49 instructors all working in a common direction to assist our students in developing their language and academic skills. Finally, we want to give a special thanks to all of the instructors who have adjusted schedules to meet the needs our students. Many have changed instructional levels, sites, and are teaching multiple-levels to help us serve our students. We do our best to predict and identify enrollment needs and numbers by site, but this is not an exact science and your understanding is appreciated. These first couple of weeks, as enrollment begins to wind-down, we will continue to make adjustments as warranted. As we settle into this first quarter, our focus is on student retention. The managed-enrollment model is designed to help us accomplish this by creating a more stable and less disruptive learning environment where teachers can get-to-know their students. High student retention is not the result of the books or materials we use, but rather; the direct result of instructors who engage students in meaningful dialogue and deliver content in methods that are relevant to the students. Our common goal and objective is retaining our students. Thank you for all you do.
Welcome back. We are excited to be offering new classes again this session. Capt. Rob Modys is back and we are thankful for his recovery. He will be teaching Saltwater Fishing SW Florida, Part 1.
Remember to arrive at least 15 minutes early to get your attendance sheets and to greet your students as they arrive to class. Someone will come around and pick up your attendance sheets once class has started. We look forward to another prosperous year for Community Education.

ZIKA AWARENESS INFORMATION CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION
The health and wellness of students and staff is a priority at CCPS. The District is working closely with the Florida Department of Health-Collier (FDOH) to share information regarding prevention of mosquito-borne diseases with students, staff and parents. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and FDOH maintain websites with up-to-date information related to Zika.
- The Zika virus spreads primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito.
- According to the CDC, only 1 in 5 people infected with the virus will have symptoms. The illness is usually mild and symptoms may include a rash, low-grade fever, red eyes, pain behind the eyes, and joint pain.
- Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect of the infant’s brain called microcephaly (small head and underdeveloped brain).
- The following measures are recommended by FDOH and CDC to help prevent Zika infection:
- Wear long sleeves and pants, shoes and socks when outside.
- Apply EPA-Registered insect repellent to exposed skin before school.
- Insect repellents are not permitted at school.
- Products with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535 are the most effective and long-lasting.
- Products with 20% picaridin, 30% DEET, or 30% oil of lemon eucalyptus can provide 8 hours of protection.
- Always apply repellent according to instructions on the label and consult with your child’s healthcare provider.
- Drain standing water and cover or remove objects that can collect water.
