From the Superintendent
Date: June 7
Host school: Sequoia
Invited schools: Glenview, Garfield, Fruitvale
****************************************
One of my priorities with the district is to engage and get connected with our employees. It is very important to me to hear from you regarding those opportunities that are most important to you and for me to be able to communicate my vision for the district. To accomplish this, I will be hosting a voluntary school site Faculty Focus Visit. The meeting is open to teachers & staff from Sequoia, Glenview, Garfield, and Fruitvale.
Below is a draft agenda for the meeting:
4:00-4:05pm Welcome by Host Principals
4:05-4:30pm Superintendent's Pathways to Excellence Plan, Recognition & Shout Outs
4:30-5:00pm Q&A
I look forward to engaging with you! If you have any questions about the meeting, please reach out to my assistant, Aiyana Mourtos at aiyana.mourtos@ousd.org
Respectfully,
Antwan
Faculty Council Note
I would like to suggest that we do not add a meeting to discuss nuts and bolts, field trips and other such things. I think we can address these issues or have discussions on our time in a more informal setting. I feel that this is a more pleasing way of doing things. It would show respect and trust of us as professionals. I understand that we won't have time during PLCs for this and that is fine.
FC Response:
Although some teachers are comfortable having discussions on their own time in more informal settings, many teachers have also reported that they do want to be asked to meet on their own time or cannot meet without planned prior notice due to other obligations. This can create conflict within a grade level team when one member is unable or unwilling to meet while the others feel the need to discuss upcoming activities or events. Ultimately this effects the ability of the entire grade level to move forward as a team.
Having a prescheduled monthly meeting honors teachers time by allowing them to have a clear meeting plan. Even with this additional 60 minute meeting Glenview's schedule next year is still under the OEA contracted PD minutes by 40 minutes per month and unlike other sites we have still preserved the 5 hours of OEA time for parent communication and additional work time and not added it to Weds. Consequently Glenview remains well under OEA contract language and also has less meeting time than the vast majority of OUSD schools.
Please note that this grade level meeting will only be once a month. FC is recommending it be the first week of every month with grade levels choosing which day to meet during that week. This meeting day will be decided by grade levels at the beginning of next year.
Anonymous Teacher Concern
I would like to suggest that we have our professional development on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3pm followed by our universal prep from 3-3:50. It would be better pedagogically to prep after our professional development. This schedule would allow for that.
FC Response
FC discussed the costs and benefits of both time frames. Both have pedagogical strengths. Ultimately OEA contract does not allow for teachers to choose their prep. times so at this time we will be moving forward with prep. beginning earlier on Weds. with PD to follow.
In addition, Learning Spot staff has agreed to not have students in the classrooms after school during the first hour so that teachers have quiet time in their rooms not only on Weds. but all days of the week.
