Great Start!

We have had a great start to our school year! We spent the week settling in and learning all about how to be a S.T.A.R. at Thorntown. Ask you children about how we are Safe, Team players, Accountable, and Respectful at school each day! Enjoy this back to school video to see the fun we've had these first couple of days!

Arrival and Dismissal: Things are going smoothly with getting students in and out of the building each day. As we start our first full week, we encourage children to start walking in on their own. We have several staff members posted throughout the building who can help them get to the right place. Starting Monday, if you plan to walk your child to class on any given day, you will need to check in with our Safe Visitor system in the office. You will need a state-issued ID to check in. We realize dismissal plans settle into a routine after the first week. Please be sure your child's teacher is clear on a consistent dismissal plan. If something changes please contact the office before 2pm. After that, it becomes difficult to ensure the plans get communicated to all parties. If your child is a walker, please talk with him/her about crossing the street with the crossing guard. If they plan to head to the gas station after school, they must travel down Vine Street and then turn on Grant Street. Traffic is too heavy on Mill Street and there is no sidewalk to help keep them off the street. If you are with your child at dismissal, we ask that you also cross with the crossing guard and travel down Vine to Grant, rather than cutting across to the gas station. This will prevent other children from following you unattended. Thank you for your cooperation with this procedure.

SAVE THE DATE - Open House Meetings: We will host parent open house meetings the week of August 19. This is an opportunity for parents to visit classrooms and hear from the teacher about the upcoming year. Important information about classroom routines and procedures will be shared. We ask that only parents attend these meetings. Space is limited and we want to keep the meeting brief. This will help us stay focused and on time. We will have childcare available for school-aged children, if you need to take advantage of that support. See below for the meetings dates for each grade level:

Monday 8/19 Grade 1 @ 6PM; Grade 5 @ 6:30PM

Tuesday 8/20 Grade 2 @ 6PM; Grade 4 @ 6:30PM

Wednesday 8/21 Grade 3 @ 6PM; Grade 6 @ 6:30PM

Thursday 8/22 PreK and Kindergarten @ 6PM
