Did you know?

Behavioral health disorders affect a significant number of America’s school-age children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13% to 20% of children living in the United States experience a mental disorder in a given year (CDC, 2013).

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents (Banspach et al., 2016).

The (CDC) 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 17.7% of high-school students had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past twelve months; 14.6% had made plans to do so; and 8.6% had made one or more attempts to do so (Kahn et al., 2016).

By providing supportive environments and teaching kids and teens to recognize their emotions and address them in health ways, we can change lives.

One way to deal with uncomfortable or unpleasant emotions is to remember the word PATH.

PAUSE: do not act on feelings right away.

ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING: are you mad at someone, or are you sad because your feelings were hurt by what they did? Whatever you are feeling, it is ok to feel that way.

THINK: think about how you can make yourself feel better after you understand your feelings.

HELP: take an action to help yourself based upon what you came up with in the “Think” step.

In celebration we will be having a Harry Potter Dress Up Day on May 4th and 5th! Students are encouraged to dress like their favorite character.

OPTION: "May the 4th be with you..." is also Star Wars day. Students can dress up like their favorite Star Wars character on May 4th and 5th.

Reminder: no weapons or costume masks(only required face mask) with your costumes.

All district owned chromebooks, chargers and wifi hotspots will be collected the week of June 14-17, the last week of school. Details to follow.

School class photos are being done a little differently this year. Each student will receive a special "2020-21 edition" class photo that was created and provided by McKinley. Hopefully next year, we will return to the district wide program, but for now be looking for these special edition ones to come home before the end of the year.

We will be having a 5th Grade Recognition for Students at 12:30 on June 16th and 17th. Due to covid rules we are not allowed to have parents and guests on campus. But, it will be filmed and shared with families.

Please do not send any students that show any signs of not feeling well to school. These symptoms would include cough, fever over 100.4 or trouble breathing. Please call the school to excuse the absence and we will have a school nurse call to discuss your situation.

Allergy season is in full swing. Some allergy symptoms are similar to those mentioned above. If your child has known allergies and dealing with the allergy symptoms, please let the office know and your child is ok to attend school. You are able to drop off allergy medicine in the office for your child to use throughout the day. This medicine would need to be in the original packaging.

Thank you for your help in keeping McKinley families, students and staff healthy.

In the fall, SKPS plans to have full-day, in-person classes, five days a week for all students. The district will follow all guidelines from the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority, which may include protocols such as wearing a face covering, frequent handwashing and some form of physical distancing.

The district will share additional information as plans are finalized throughout the spring and summer.

Deadline to register for guaranteed EDGE spot

The deadline to register for a guaranteed spot in EDGE is Friday, May 14, 2021. Students registered after this date will be enrolled if there is room in the program.

EDGE online program

We will continue offering our online-only Enhanced Digital Guided Education (EDGE) program. Students who are in EDGE will remain connected to their resident school while receiving online instruction by Salem-Keizer’s EDGE teachers.

Starting in the fall of 2021, EDGE students can choose between two learning pathways to best meet the needs of individual students and their families. One option is called EDGE Connected, which includes daily, teacher-led instruction. The other option is EDGE Independent, which is student-paced with teacher oversight and offers a more flexible schedule.

Meals available at all elementary, middle, and high schools

While your student is in school for hybrid learning, they will receive all their meals at school, at no cost. Hybrid learning students will be fed breakfast and lunch on site and will be offered a supper as they leave. Each student is allowed one breakfast, one lunch, and one supper per day so that means parents cannot pick up meals from the Grab-N-Go sites when their student is on site for hybrid learning. On the days your student is not on site for hybrid learning, meals are available at any of the Grab-N-Go sites throughout the community.

Grab-N-Go meal sites will be open at all elementary schools from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with all middle and high schools distribution from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meals are free for any child or teen ages 1-18, and adults with special needs ages 18-21 who are enrolled in a Salem-Keizer Public Schools program.

Breakfast, lunch and supper

We are now including suppers in the Grab-N-Go meal bag. Each bag contains breakfast, lunch and supper. If you are picking up multiple bags, we recommend bringing your own bag to help carry the amount of food being distributed.
