DECEMBER 14, 2022 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
Winter break is fast approaching. This makes us really focused on designing and delivering meaningful student learning experiences in the days remaining prior to winter break. Attendance and engagement is critical to student learning and progress. Please reiterate the importance of effort and engagement over the next week. Winter break will begin on Friday, December 23 and students will return to classes on Tuesday, January 3.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to follow along or monitor your student’s learning progress via Schoology. If you aren’t already set up, we have included instructions for accessing Schoology in today’s newsletter. You can also ask your student for help.
Earlier this week, our counselors hosted the first “Let’s Talk: Career, College and Life” session for families. These are informal opportunities to connect with counselors to help prepare you and your student for their next steps at school and beyond. All sessions are open for whatever topics people want to discuss. Sign up for an upcoming session on this registration form.
I mentioned previously that my wife and I are taking up cross country skiing as a winter hobby. While the snow so far has been disappointing for skiing, I’ll take a slushy drive to work over a blizzard. My best to you as you navigate the weather over the next few days – and thanks for your partnership in building bright futures together…one school, one community #SLPPantherProud!

Health Office donations
The health office is in need of clothing. We are looking for clothing donations to keep in the health office for students. We can use boy's, girl's, men's and women's tops and bottoms. Items that are loose fitting work the best, such as sweatpants, yoga pants, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. All sizes are appreciated.
Parent and guardian access to learning: How to log in to Schoology
As we start Trimester 2, we want to remind families that Spring Lake Park Schools students in grades 3-12 use Schoology for their learning. Parents/guardians can also access these platforms and follow along with what their children are learning in school. Once a parent or guardian logs on, if you're not sure what you're looking at or where to find something, ask your student to give you a tour!
Schoology - grades 3-12
Schoology is our primary learning management system for students grades 3-12. Schoology embeds course content, videos, assignments, quizzes, links and more. Parents/guardians can access Schoology and have total visibility into what their children are learning at school.
- If you are logging into Schoology from a computer, use this link. Watch this video to learn more.
- If you are logging into Schoology from the app, make sure to select Log In through your School and type in Spring Lake Park Schools. Watch this video to learn more.

Creating Conditions to Learn
Second graders sit in a circle on the music room floor. There’s excited chatter, the volume rising. Today, they are creating sound effects. The teacher raises her hand with all five fingers extended. Without saying a word, she is asking them to “give her five,” – eyes on speaker, quiet voices, ears listening, hands free, body still. Slowly, the kids’ hands go up in response. The room grows quiet.
“Give me five” is one common strategy Spring Lake Park Schools teachers are using across all grade levels to quietly and calmly gain student attention. It’s one of several strategies for creating a learner centered environment staff have focused on this school year to support student learning and engagement.
“We’ve gathered a set of common strategies to support all aspects of a student’s development and create safe, positive and welcoming learning environments,” says Kaline Sandven Marinello, director of special education and student services. “Kids need these things in order to learn and we want to support teachers in consistently creating these conditions for learning across our schools and grade levels.”
Planning for life after high school is easier with support. Students and parents of the Class of 2024 attended Spring Lake Park High School's 6th Annual College Planning Night to learn about many topics surrounding life after graduation - such as financial aid, grants and scholarships, finding the right fit and more!
