Reopening options to be considered at upcoming board meeting

Dear Lucia Mar Staff and Families,

Given the rapid increase in COVID-19 case counts within our County, mostly within our local collegiate settings, it is likely that the County will move into the purple (most restrictive) tier of the State Blueprint for a Safer Economy (https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/). When the County is in the purple (most restrictive) tier, school districts are prohibited from reopening. Given this, the Board of Education will consider postponing its scheduled elementary reopening date at its upcoming regular meeting on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

The District had previously been advised that if school districts approved a specific reopening date in their reopening plan, even if the County’s tier status changed, it would be allowed to continue with their in-person reopening plan. However, given recent changes to State Public Health Guidance, County Public Health informed us yesterday that this is no longer the case. The Board has directed staff to provide a report on possible options to move forward with reopening during Tuesday’s meeting.

We regret that the changing local and state guidance continues to create challenges for our families and staff. More information will be provided during Tuesday’s regular board meeting. Thank you for continued support and understanding during these challenging times.

Sincerely,
Paul Fawcett, Ed.D
Superintendent
