West Pine Middle
Ignite! Engage! Grow!
A Note from Mrs. Wiley
Our students will take NC Check-in #3 this week in reading and math. This is their last Check-in prior to EOGs. Please encourage your child to do his/her very best so that our teachers have a clear understanding of what your child knows and where he/she needs additional support. We are 32 school days away from our first EOG.
For our families who use the 6th/8th grade afternoon carline, I kindly ask that you remain in close proximity of your small children if they use our swings. If you cannot see your child, they shouldn’t be there. Our school day doesn't dismiss until 3pm, so you are required to supervise your child. Children should not pick up branches, sticks or other objects to hit one another or throw nor should they climb trees or fences. If problems persist, the swings will not be available for use. Also, if you are picking up an 8th grader, please use your turn signal to alert the staff member on duty. This helps keep the carline moving.
Check out the information from our PTSO regarding Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week.
For planning purposes, there is no school Friday, and Monday, April 18th, is a teacher workday.
Take care. JW
Updates
FROM THE WPMS PTSO
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is May 2-6 and we need your help to make this a fantastic week for all of the staff at WPM! Here is a daily schedule of what we have planned:
- Monday: Ole Ole, Start the Week with a Pastry and Cafe! (need donations of breakfast pastries, donuts, scones, muffins, etc. and Keurig Pods, Coffee Creams, and disposable coffee cups)
- Tuesday: Taco Tuesday (we will provide lunch and cover lunchroom duty for teachers to be able to eat lunch by themselves. Sign up for food items, volunteer helpers, or both!)
- Wednesday: Tienda on Wheels Wednesday (PTSO will be purchasing snack items and drinks and delivering "Room Service" style. No sign ups for this day!)
- Thursday: Thirsty Thursday. We want to give each staff member a Starbucks gift card. We are asking for donations of $10 gift cards for Starbucks (Please do not write any names on the cards, we will make sure that each staff member receives one). You can send in as many as you are comfortable with. We are hoping to gift all 80 staff members. Please bring all cards (or have your child bring) to the front office NO LATER THAN APRIL 26th SO WE CAN MAKE SURE WE WILL HAVE ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE!
- Friday: Fiesta Friday: El Regalo (to treat or gift). PTSO is purchasing a personalized "bento" style lunch container for all staff!
This is the first time in 3 years that the staff will be celebrated by the parents during Teacher Appreciation Week, and we hope that with everyone's help, it will make their week a bit brighter! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0E4BA5AE2BA5F49-nacho

Tentative test dates for WPMS are as follows: May 25 - 6th/7th MA and 8th ELA, May 27 - 8th SCI, and June 1 - 6th/7th ELA and 8th MA/Math 1. Make-up testing will take place on non-test days. Arrival/Dismissal Reminders
- School begins at 8am. If your child has a dr/dentist appointment, please make sure he/she brings in a note.
- Afternoon checkouts must be made prior to 2:30pm.
- More information can be found in the SCHOOL INFORMATION section (below).
- As a reminder, students must pass 3 of their 4 core classes for the year to be promoted to the next grade.
- In addition, the North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law requires that absences be recorded as excused or unexcused. If your child accumulates excessive unexcused absences a referral will be made to the school social worker. If you have any questions or concerns about attendance or tardies, please contact your child's teacher or the school social worker.
- ***Please note we will look at every student's situation. If you or your child hasn't submitted excuse notes for any unexcused absences, please send them in to your child's homeroom teacher so we can update.

Middle School Athletic Eligibility (Academics & Attendance)
A student must meet the following requirements:
Academics
1. In grades six, seven and eight, the student must pass three out of four core classes each semester.
2. If an athlete is "academically eligible” or "academically ineligible” at the beginning of any semester, that status is retained throughout the full semester. This means that all Second Half of Winter & Spring Semester sports are dependent upon the prior Fall semester grades.
Attendance
Daily attendance is essential for student academic success and emotional well-being. If students are absent, please communicate with teachers for access to work through Canvas. If students come in tardy, they must arrive by 11:30am to be considered present for the day. Students who are absent may not practice after school, travel with the team on the activity bus to away games, or be able to play on game day.

School Information
Not Feeling Well...
- Students who are not feeling well are asked to stay home. Staying home when sick is essential to keeping infections out of school and preventing spread to others.
Cell Phones
- Students are reminded each morning during announcements to turn off their cell phones and place them in their book bags. If there is an emergency and your child needs to contact you, he/she is allowed to come to the office to call. Same goes for you. Please call the office and we will be sure to get the message to your child
Child Nutrition Update
- School meals are provided to all students free of charge this year. However, it is still important that families who qualify for this benefit complete a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. This application has benefits beyond school meals, such as discounted fees on academic tests and exams, college applications, increased school funding to support all students and more. To have an application mailed to you, call the Child Nutrition Office at (910) 947-2342 or email cndirector@ncmcs.org.
Afternoon dismissal
- School dismisses at 3pm. 6th graders are picked up at the front of the school. 7th graders are picked up by the baseball field (enter at West Pine Elementary School). 8th graders are picked up in the back parking lot (staff parking area). Please note: once the 8th grade afternoon carline is at capacity, those cars will be asked to remain in the regular line until a staff member directs them to the back of the school.
- 8th grade cars are asked to use their right turn signal to alert the staff member on duty directing traffic that you are turning right.
- 6th/8th carline: All cars are asked to stay close to the curb in the bend near the split in the road so that the 8th grade cars have enough clearance to exit safely.
Late Arrivals
- Students arriving after 8am must sign in at the front office. A parent/guardian must accompany the student to the front door and ring bell for assistance.
Early Dismissals
- We understand that doctor/dental appointments and other appointments cannot be avoided. However, in order to protect the instructional time and limit class disruptions, no early dismissals will be allowed after 2:30pm. Students will not be called out of class early until the parent/guardian arrives to school. Any changes to your child's afternoon ride home must be shared with our office staff prior to 2:30pm.
Instructional Fees
- School fees are $40 (technology and instructional). There may be additional fees for encore classes. Those fees can be paid online, or your child can bring in to school and one of our staff members will receipt. Families may submit a request for waiver or reduction of fees form if they feel they cannot afford to pay these fees. This form is available through our bookkeeper, Ms. Campos.
Student Medication
- All medication, prescription and/or over-the-counter drugs that parents want given at school must have a physician order accompanying the medication to school. The Request for Medication Administration in School Form (Spanish) must be filled out in its entirety, on one sheet of paper with the front page being the physician order, and the back, the parent authorization. Medication of any type must be brought to school by the parent/guardian in the original container with the Request form Medication Administration at School completed by the physician and the parent/guardian.
