Measurement, Area, and Volume - Section 10
10.1
Base of Parallelogram: length of
any one of its sides
Height of Parallelogram: perpendicular
distance between the base and the
opposite sides
Bases of a Trapezoid: its two parallel sides
Height of a Trapezoid: perpendicular
distance between the bases
Formulas:
* Area of a trapezoid:
*A=1/2(b + b)h
*Area of a parallelogram:
*A=bh
10.2
Area: the number of square units covered by a figure
Circle: set of all points in a plane that are the same distance, called radius, from a fixed point, called the center
Radius: distance between the center and any point on the center
Diameter: the distance across the circle through the center
Circumference: the distance around a circle
Pi: the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter
Formulas:
*Area of a circle:
*A=pi r square
10.3
solid: a three dimensional figure that encloses a part of space
polyhedron: solid that is enclosed by polygons
faces: polygons that form a polyhedron
prism: has two bases and is a polyhedron
pyramid: has one base and the edges meet in one point
cylinder: two bases that are circular
cone: is a solid with one circular base
sphere: solid formed by all points in space that are the same distance from a fixed point
edge: segments where faces of a polygon meet
vertex: where three or more edges meet
10.4
surface area: the sum of the areas of its faces
Formulas:
*Surface area of a prism:
* S=2B+Ph
* Surface area of a cylinder
* S=2B+Ch S= 2 pi*r*r+2*pi*r*h
10.5
Vocabulary:
slant height: l of a regular pyramid is the height of a lateral face (any face but the base)Formulas:
* Surface area of a Pyramid
*S=B+1/2Pl
* Surface area of a cone:
* S= pi*r*r + pi*r*l
10.6
Volume: is a measure of the amount of space it occupies
Formula:
*Volume of a Prism
* V=Bh
* Volume of a cylinder
* V=bh V= pi*r*r*h
10.7
* Volume of a Pyramid
* V=1/3Bh
* Volume of a Cone:
* V=1/3Bh V=1/3pi*r*r*h
