Information for Parents of Teens
Snapchat and Parental Control on Phones
My experience is that most parents are not that knowledgeable of Snapchat outside of the fun filters you can use to entertain toddlers. For more information about the hows and whats of Snapchat, click here for a parents guide to Snapchat.
Here is my opinion of Snapchat: take it or leave it. Most students are sending pictures of silly faces and goofy videos of them dancing in the halls, but when students have conflict or are making bad choices, Snapchat is usually involved. Students choose to send messages on Snapchat because they go away and parents can't see them. This is the problem for me. While it's fun to send pictures of yourself with a dog tongue and ears, is it worth it to allow a 14 year old complete privacy in messaging? I think not.
The simplest solution to this is parental controls. All major wireless carriers allow you to manage the use of data and messaging on your student's phone. Many students have earned your trust and use social media, including Snapchat, responsibly. Still, limiting and monitoring use ensures students are focusing on more than the next snap.
Below, I've listed links to many major wireless carriers' parental controls. If you have more questions, simply call your provider or stop by a store for more details. It's worth it.
