Advising, Career, and Academic Support News - April 28
Internships: Now? Later?
The landscape of summer internships continues to change. On April 15, CP&D surveyed our internship sites (primarily local) from the past two years and compiled a summary of those who responded:
- Approximately 30% of locations are continuing as planned to host interns, 30% stated they are not planning on hosting an intern for this summer, and 30% are waiting to see what happens before deciding.
- Our results are consistent with other surveys conducted across the country. It is important to note that the availability of internships is also dependent on the industry and the area of the country.
- Many organizations are in “wait and see” mode concerning their summer internships. While this is understandable, there are still opportunities for students to find internships (click the bar below!). Internship start and end dates can be fairly flexible so it is possible to secure an internship that starts later in the summer, as long as you can complete required hours (if seeking college credit).
- Consider looking at both your summer and fall class schedules: Could you swap a summer and fall class to make room for a fall internship if summer plans don't work out? While we don't know what fall brings, more opportunities may be available at that time. Check with Academic Advising for scheduling questions or make an appointment with them on Handshake. CP&D and AA want to especially encourage students in programs that require internships for graduation to carefully research and consider these decisions.
