A Note from your Principal
Dear West Newton Families,
We are thankful for 10 weeks together with both our on-site and remote learners. Part of our culture here in MSD Decatur Township is the concept of “E + R = O” or Event + Response = Outcome. This simple equation or framework allows you to be intentional about the way you think, make decisions, and act. The key to producing outcomes is not the events or circumstances you encounter, but how you choose to respond. We continue to share examples of E + R = O with students each week and reflect on ways to manage our responses despite the circumstances. Ask your child about E + R = O, and how he/she can use this each day!
I would like to personally wish all students, families, and staff a safe, relaxing, and fun fall break. We look forward to welcoming students back on Monday, October 26th.
With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. LeMay, Principal
IREAD Assessment Update from Mrs. Humphries
Indiana education officials have given the school district a plan to administer the IREAD-3 test this fall. The IREAD-3 assessment is a summative assessment that measures foundational reading standards through grade 3.This assessment was scheduled for March 2020, however, due to COVID-19, the assessment was suspended. All students in 4th grade will be taking the IREAD-3 assessment this fall. Our 4th Grade in-person students will be participating in this assessment on November 2 & November 4. Our 4th grade remote students will participate in-person on November 5th from 9:00 a.m-1:00 p.m. Mrs. Humphries has already reached out to all of our 4th grade remote students' families, and more information will be coming through Parent Square. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Humphries (317-856-5237 ext.12307).
Social Emotional Learning from Mrs. Whitman
Every person has a different story, a different situation, and a different set of circumstances. We all have had new obstacles this year with COVID-19, and each person has a different perspective and response.
The focus of Second Steps for the past few weeks has been empathy. Empathy is the ability to recognize emotions and feelings in others in order to understand their experience. Students have been learning and practicing the skill of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes” by:
Listening to others with attention
Respecting similarities and differences
Understanding perspectives
Engaging in conversations and giving compliment compliments
Showing compassion
Being assertive with their own feelings
We are working to be more empathetic towards one another in order to build better relationships between students, staff, and families in Decatur Township.
Please keep your eyes open for more Second Step updates!
Sincerely your Social Emotional Learning Coach,
Sara Whitman

A Note from the Nurse
Please make sure your child has a water bottle in school at all times. Due to covid-19 regulations, water fountains have been disabled and the only way your child will be able to receive water is during lunch time and/or filling up their water bottles at particular locations within the school. Ailments such as headaches and stomach aches are often times related to lack of water intake. It is very important that your child stays hydrated throughout the day in order for them to get the best learning experience they can. Thank you all for your understanding and help in keeping our Tiger cubs safe and healthy!!!!!

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS
Students are doing an amazing job wearing their masks and following safety procedures. Thank you for continuing to send your child to school wearing a mask.

For each visit through November in which our supporters use our unique code, 5% will be given back to DTEF.
I have attached an image that can be used in store (bar code) or for online ordering (DECATUREDU). We also have a limited number of key tags available with the barcode/online code.
If you haven't had Azzip Pizza, they are located on the south side at US 31 & Stop 11, and their pizza is awesome! Give it a try and help us raise money to continue to fund grants!
