FMS Spelling Bee
The FMS library was the setting of the annual Fowler Middle School Spelling Bee on Tuesday, December 10th. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade spellers competed in a bee that lasted more than seven rounds. 7th grade student Sahana Naharaajan out-spelled the other competitors to become the champion. Second place was secured by Arkadeep Dutta.
The spellers who competed in the Bee were selected through preliminary classroom bees held during ILA classes earlier. The judges for the spelling bee were Campus Instructional Support Facilitator Mrs. Sally Partin, 8th grade Teen Leadership teacher Mrs. Kim Smolka, and 8th grade Science teacher Mr. Erik Peterson. The pronouncer for the bee was 8th grade ILA teacher Mrs. Linda Bugni. Sahana will now advance to the Frisco ISD Spelling Bee on January 22, 2019 at Memorial High School. Fowler is very proud of Sahana’s hard work! Congratulations on a job well done!

Team News
6th Grade
For the third nine weeks, sixth grade science will start January with our study of physics! We will learn about balanced and unbalanced forces, review potential and kinetic energy, learn to calculate speed, and graph motion. In mid-February, we will shift gears and begin our study of Geology. For this unit, we will study the rock cycle, as well as plate tectonics.
In sixth-grade math, we have wrapped up module 4 on integers and the coordinate plane and will be taking the module 4 test when the students return from winter break. In module 5, we will cover order of operations, algebraic expressions and inequalities. Students will continue to work on MATHia through the break and study for the module 4 test. We hope everyone had a safe and happy winter break, and we look forward to the second half of the school year!
Sixth graders will kick off the second semester by studying the geography, history and culture of Russia and the Eurasian Republics. Students will study about the disaster at Chernobyl as well as the cultural importance of folktales. Students will then continue their journey around the world to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our awesome readers and writers are wrapping up the second nine weeks and have successfully completed the first semester. We have read nonfiction texts covering memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, and poetry. Our students have completed informational essays and have written lots of great pieces. We are reading independently at school daily and encourage all students to continue reading at home nightly. Please remind your child to practice their stems at home. These can be found on Canvas. Thank you for sharing your children with us. We wish you all a happy new year!
7th Grade
7th Graders are ringing in the New Year with exciting happenings! In science we've been covering structure, function and the interaction between human body systems. We will be wrapping up human body systems after the break and will begin genetics.
The 7th grade mathematicians are working on Module 6 – Financial Literacy! It’s time to talk about money! Feel free to discuss income tax, budgets, net worth, liabilities and assets with your mathematician.
In ILA, students have been reading about how people overcome adversity. Students wrote an expository essay relating to our unit’s Essential Question: How can we overcome adversity/obstacles? Our writers are also learning about the many different ways that they can revise and edit their writing using different writing strategies.
Texas history classes have fought the Texas Revolution and won their independence from Mexico! Our young historians have learned about many of the important battles, people, and issues that make Texas so unique. We are wrapping up the years of the Republic of Texas from 1836-1845 and will soon be learning about the annexation and early statehood of Texas.
8th Grade
Our 8th grade scientists have finished two of their most complex units during this fall semester: chemistry and physics. They are now involved in their study of plate tectonics, and will move into ecology at the start of 2020!
8th grade ILA concludes fall semester with reflecting on what the past can teach us. This will transition well into January as we explore the essential question: When is it right to take a stand? We will continue to improve writing using evidence to support a viewpoint, as well as read a variety of texts including short stories, independent novels, informational articles and editorials to enrich our literacy diet. As your child gears up for the new year, please continue to encourage him/her to "get caught" reading!
Counselors' Corner
As we begin the second semester of the school year, there are some important dates that the counselors would like you to be aware of once we return from winter break.
We are excited that during the week of February 18 – 21, 2020, Fowler will be celebrating Diversity Week. The diversity theme this year is “Celebrate Diversity”. We are looking forward to celebrating the many gifts, talents and experiences that make the Fowler community so special.
Another important event near the end of this six weeks, February 10-21, 2020, is the Frisco Family Services Food Drive sponsored by the Fowler Student Council. Our student body will collect items for needy families in the area. There will be more details as we get closer to the drive. Please encourage your students to take part in this worthy cause.

The Great Kindness Challenge –
During the week of January 27-31, 2020 we encourage all Fowler students to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge. Students will be challenged to complete several different acts of kindness during the week, with the goal of empowering all of the Fowler community to create a culture of kindness.

Aim for Success Parent Presentation – all parents are welcome to attend this presentation, however, the information will be aligned with the 6th grade student presentation scheduled for March 22nd. Please RSVP to Simone Alperin at alperinS@friscoisd.org by noon on Tuesday, March 19th if you plan to attend the Aim for Success presentation. Thanks!
Friday, March 20, 2020– Aim for Success student presentations through 6th grade Science classes.
Aim for Success is an independent, non-profit, educational organization that promotes a lifestyle of excellence by encouraging the development of self control, self respect, and self discipline. Through live presentations to our 6th graders, students are encouraged to develop strong, responsible character as they deal with sexual pressure. Through Aim for Success presentations, students learn the wisdom of committing to be sexually abstinent until marriage. Parents are inspired to raise responsible children who know their choices have consequences. If you would prefer that your child not participate in this presentation, please contact Kristin Cabaniss at cabanisk@friscoisd.org.
