West News Update
February 2016
Conferences
Spring conferences will be taking place next week. Teachers are ready to visit with parents and students about progress through the mid-term of the third-quarter. Parent/Teacher conferences will look a bit different than past years. The first evening, Wednesday, February 10th, is reserved for parent/teacher meetings that are prearranged by teachers with parents. Teachers will not be available for drop in conferences on February 10th.
Thursday, February 11th from 5:00-8:00 pm parents are encouraged to attend Conferences and visit their child’s teachers. Progress reports will be available as you enter the school. Teachers will be seated by grade level teams around the Commons area. Parents will be able to move from teacher to teacher. Our hope is that this will allow families to talk with those teachers they choose in a quicker manner than searching around the school for them.
You are encouraged to bring your child for conferences to participate in the conversations with you and their teachers. We will also hold a Parent Meeting to discuss our Spring Fling fund raiser, distribution of Parent Involvement Funds, and STEM integration at West for the upcoming school year at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 11th. We hope you are able to attend conferences!

Panda Express on 12th Avenue will host a fundraiser for West TOMORROW. It is an all-day event. What an easy, quick dinner for you and your family before or after our school dance. Tell them you are with West Middle School when you go in. Flyers are available at the school.

STEM at West
Have you heard the term STEM being used and wondered what it meant? STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Many of the subjects we teach address one of these four areas directly or indirectly.
As we educate students and prepare them for college and career readiness our intent is to introduce them to many different areas, peak their interest, and provide them insight to opportunities that lie ahead in their futures. The STEM fields in business and industry are too numerous to list. Corporations promoting STEM education is growing daily. They are looking to grow the work force with skills that support their needs. West sees the importance of this connection for our students. The excitement of students evident through their engagement in STEM classes and activities is also something we have taken note of.
The past two years we have added elective classes connected to STEM in addition to those already on our course list. They are hands on classes that allow students to apply their learning in math, science, reading, writing. Pre-engineering, Gateway to Technology, STEM electives on the 6th and 7th grade wheel, and Robotics are electives directly tied to STEM. Our intent is to continue to grow in opportunities for students in STEM.
Is your child taking a STEM related class? We would love to hear feedback from you on growing STEM at West. Contact Ms. Duby if you would like to talk about this.
