Unit 3: Government at Work
Essential Question: Why do we need a government?
In this unit, students will read informational texts about present-day government workers and laws, as well as historical fiction stories set during the American Revolution. They will synthesize information to build the following enduring understandings:
- The U.S. Government provides laws and services to help protect the freedom and safety of the people.
- People can contribute to their communities and their government in many different ways.
- The United States can be represented by symbols and documents.
- Historical fiction is a genre that bases its stories and characters on actual events and people from the past
HOW CAN YOU HELP AT HOME?
MONTHLY READING LOGS
Dear Families,
We are starting a reading incentive for reading at home! Each month a new book log will come home. It has 10 slots for 10 books. Each time you read, fill out the chart and sign it. Once 10 books are completed, have your child bring back the book log for a trip to the Book Vending Machine! We hope that this encourages the love of reading and a little extra family time at home.
Once you are done with a book, you have the option to log into classlink and take an AR test. Most books are available. You can take this together, or your child can do it independently. It quizzes their comprehension and also allows them to gain AR points for more prizes from the Library. This is NOT mandatory, but available.
PLANNER IMPLEMENTION
- Parents will need to sign/initial each night acknowledging that they saw how their child’s behavior was that day.
- Your acknowledgement of their planner will earn them 2 dojo points!
- You will also see a word of the day related to our Fundations unit and a math problem of the day.
If you click on the picture of the planner, it will enlarge. There is information about what you are looking for and where to sign.
This comes home daily. Just like their red VIP folder. Both should be checked. I appreciate your support in creating a successful and helpful classroom.
READ. READ. READ.
Trouble figuring out a word
- Does that make sense? (picture and story)
- Does that look right? (letters in the word)
- Does that sound right? (how it is said)
Comprehension
- Fiction - 5 Finger Retell
- Non-Fiction - 5 Details or Facts
MENSA BOOKS
TAKE HOME PACKETS
At the beginning of each unit for Fundations and Math, take home packets are sent home in your child's red VIP folder. These packets include:
- an explanation of the topic
- examples
- practice problems & questions
These packets will keep you the most up-to-date with your child's education.
PRACTICE BASIC MATH FACTS TO 20
Make some flash cards and practice adding and subtracting up to 20! One of your child's standards is to be able to fluently add and subtract to 20 by the end of 2nd grade.
