Excellent PE Adventures!
Crystal Gorwitz and I have started a video cast called Crystal and Jo's Excellent PE Adventures. Approximately once month we meet via Google Hangout On Air and discuss what we have been up to in our classrooms, what new ideas we have tried or resources we have used, and what hasn't worked as well! Each episode features show notes so that you can easily find links to the resources we discuss. Check it out here or by viewing Episode 1 below.

Celebrations!
It's not to late to submit - please share all of your PE and Health celebrations from the past year by completing the form below. The positive comments, pats on the back, student achievements, funnies and all the special things that remind us why we love teaching.
Scavenger Hunt Warm Up's
Looking for quick and easy warm up's that address multiple components of fitness? Create a scavenger hunt where students complete each task in order. Make a copy of either of these two examples and customize the activities for your activity spaces.
Activity, History, and Literacy and not during lesson time!
Mike Graham recently shared his unique Columbus Day Race on Twitter. In the 5 weeks leading up to Columbus Day, he challenges each class in his elementary school to rack up activity and reading minutes to race their boats and "beat" Columbus' boat to its destination ahead of Columbus. Watch his video below to learn more.

Debriefing and Reflection Activities in Health and PE
As teachers we use formative assessments, exit tickets, and reflection activities to determine what students have learned during the class or unit and what further questions they may have. Dale Sidebottom has put together 8 different activities that could be used in either Health or PE to check for understanding, debrief, or reflect on class material. You can check these out here.
Monthly Challenge: Make a Difference Month
This month's challenge is for you to Make a Difference. Each day in October, aim to do something to Make a Difference to yourself and your health and make a difference to someone else. Track your progress here. Remember, when you are healthy, happy, and rested you are far better able to help others. Here are some ideas:
For Yourself:
- Make time to be active
- Plan quiet time
- Invest in extra sleep
- Drink plenty of water - hydration=energy
- Set aside time for you to enjoy a favorite activity or hobby
- Plan your meals
For Others:
- Rake your neighbors leaves
- Pick up someone else's equipment/ trash
- Thank someone/ recognize someone for helping you
- Hold a door open for someone
- Let someone go ahead of you in a line
- Compliment someone
Make a Difference Day is on October 25th this year - millions of people will volunteer their time to helping others. This is an excellent opportunity for your students to get involved in a community activity such as raking leaves for elderly or disabled neighbors.
