Grandparents Night on September 14, 2023

Grandparents Night will be Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM. We will have classrooms open, have a photo booth area in the cafeteria. We will have cookies in the pod areas. We will also have the Book Fair open because we know grandparents love to encourage reading with their grandchildren. If your child's grandparents are not around or live far away, feel free to invite a "grand-person" or "Very Important Person" to come that night. This event is meant to be a special night between one or two special people and your child. Parents are encouraged to wait until conferences or Donuts for Dad, Muffins for Mom events coming later in the year. We also encourage you to make arrangements for younger or older children so the night is a special bonding time between grandparents/grand-person and the child. An RSVP form will come home next week. Grandparents/grand-person should bring their phone to take pictures and their wallet to buy books at the Book Fair.

Book Fair

Scholastic Book Fair will run from September 11 - September 15th. Students will be able to shop at a scheduled time during the week. It will be open for grandparent's night on September 14th from 5pm - 7pm. E-wallet is available by signing up at Scholastic.com. It makes shopping convenient and the students do not have to bring money to school. Parents can set up accounts and control their children's spending.

LIFESKILLS and LIFELONG GUIDELINES

At Andrews, we have three big rules: respect, responsibility and safety.

Lifelong Guidelines are basic guidelines to follow in any situation.

We also follow five LIFELONG GUIDELINES:

  • Active Listening: to listen attentively and with the intention of understanding
  • Personal Best: to always try your best and put forth your best effort
  • No Put Downs: to never use words, actions, and/or body language that degrades, humiliates or dishonors others
  • Truthful: to always tell the truth
  • Trustworthiness: to act in a manner that makes one worthy of trust and confidence

LIFESKILLS are character traits which will help you be successful and happy in life.

We teach the following LIFESKILLS:

  • Caring: to feel and show concern for others
  • Common Sense: to use good judgement
  • Cooperation: to work together towards a common goal or purpose
  • Courage: to act according to one's beliefs despite the fear of consequences
  • Curiosity: A desire to investigate and seek understanding of one's world
  • Effort: to do your best
  • Flexibility: To be willing to alter plans when necessary
  • Friendship: to make and keep friends through mutual trust and caring
  • Initiative: to do something of one's own free will because it needs to be done
  • Integrity: to act according to a sense of what's right and wrong
  • Organization: to plan, arrange, and implement in an orderly way; to keep things orderly and ready to use
  • Patience: to wait calmly for someone or something
  • Perseverance: to keep at it and not give up
  • Problem Solving: to create solutions to difficult situations and everyday problems
  • Resourcefulness: to respond to challenges and opportunities in innovative and creative ways
  • Pride: satisfaction from doing one's personal best

Each week we will focus on one of the LIFELONG GUIDELINES or LIFESKILLS. Each week, the classroom teachers will nominate a child from their room for the LIFESKILL AWARD for consistently being an example of the focus trait. Award winners will be announced on the morning announcements and have their picture on our FACEBOOK page, as long as they have a media release on file.

A.L.I.C.E. Drill in September

In September, we will have an A.L.I.C.E. drill. A is for Alert. L is for Lock Down. I is for Inform. C is for Counter. E is for Evacuate. The A.L.I.C.E. drill is for practicing what to do in the event of an "active shooter". I know this is a scary thought and we handle it as carefully as we can with young children. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and have a plan. We will read the book I'm Not Scared...I'm Prepared! by Julia Cook. It presents the plan in a format for elementary students. I will send home a letter with more information the week of our drill. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 260-786-3021.
