BOE Recognition - Accelerated Reading and Writing Student Completors
Monett Elementary students were recognized in the May BOE meeting for the completion of the Accelerated Reading and Writing program.
Carrie Smith, Janna Hightower, Charity Rakoski, Lori Forrest, and Jennifer Eaton worked with 110 students at the MES campus that required additional support in reading and writing. Out of the 110 students, 77% reached accelerated progress. All kindergarten students were tested before the end of the school year in reading and writing in preparation for the next school year. Early testing will result in a faster implementation in the fall, giving our reading recovery and small group reading teachers more time and opportunity to work with students. Supporting early interventions in reading and writing is critical in ensuring students are on the right track for the following grade levels.

Mathematics Curriculum
Monett is supplementing their math curriculum and will be implementing these changes in the 2021-2022 school year. Students in grades K-5 will be using the Bridges Mathematics curriculum, and grades 6-8 will be using the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. The Curriculum and Instruction department began the Professional Development of teachers in K-8 on May 25th and May 26th (photos below). This professional learning will continue throughout the school year and beyond.
We had two teachers at each grade level run a pilot program in the spring. We received excellent feedback from teachers and students. The photos below are from a 5th-grade classroom working on a math unit. The math unit is about adding and subtracting fractions. Students were working through a session called "River Trail." Students were tasked with creating a scale of a river trail and all the components found along a trail (bathrooms, water fountains, etc.) using 30 kilometers as the whole and fractional parts for the elements.
Mrs. Roderman said, "It is AMAZING seeing students work alongside each other and the teachers moving toward true facilitating." Teachers and students are excited about the implementation of the Bridges and Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. We will share more about the Math curriculum in the 2021-2022 school year.
Monett Elementary students played a math game using the Bridges Mathematics curriculum during the March BOE meeting. This game was part of the Bridges Mathematics curriculum pilot program. Both our students and the BOE members enjoyed the Bridges Math game.
Monett Shark Tank
**Attention 2021-2022 Students - Parents, we encourage you to speak to your student about this great opportunity.**
GO CAPS is partnering with the Monett Chamber of Commerce Foundation to bring budding Entrepreneurs an opportunity to launch your very own company. Through this program, you could have start-up expenses covered for your own personal business. This is a means of bringing your ideas to life without having the initial cash investment on hand. This fall, real money will be awarded to students like you through a "Shark Tank" style event. Leading up to the event, local business leaders and entrepreneurs will coach and help you create and refine your business plan and pitch to the sharks.
Seating for the business plan coaching classes are limited, and will be held once a week after school. If you are interested or have any questions about the program, please contact Dr. Josh Carter at jcarter@monettschools.org.
