Lockout Drill - Tuesday, 10/9
Each month, we host a fire drill/evacuation, and we also practice a variety of other drill types. On Tuesday, 10/9, we'll be hosting a "Lockout" drill. Here's some information about Lockouts.
- WHY? a "Lockout" would be called if there was a need to keep students and staff inside, but there was not an immediate threat to student safety. Examples might be an animal that is loose on campus (it's happened!), or police activity in the area but not in proximity to LCES.
- WHAT DO STAFF DO? we secure our campus (lock all doors and gates) so that no one can get in. Staff take role and our office team verifies that all students are accounted for. Staff continue teaching activities.
- WHAT DO STUDENTS DO? staff will move students to their classroom or other space (i.e. MPR) and class activities continue on as normal.
- WHAT ABOUT RESTROOM USE? it depends; if the threat is significant and doesn't diminish, we may not allow students to leave to use the restroom (although all rooms have an emergency restroom bucket available to use if needed); if the threat isn't local, facilitated restroom use might be allowed - we would rely on the input from the district & local law enforcement to make a decision on restroom use.
- WOULD PARENTS BE INFORMED? yes, although you may not be informed after the fact (i.e. if it was a wild animal); information would come to you via a School Messenger email (like this newsletter); we may also communicate via our website, our school app and/or a phone message; if the situation was urgent, we'd be sure to be in touch with families as soon as we can ensure the kids are safe.
- CAN I CHECK OUT MY CHILD DURING A LOCKOUT? probably not (depends on the threat), but you can as soon as the threat has subsided.
For more information, check out this informational flier - focus on the section with the blue circle w/ 2 hands. If you have any questions, please contact Jen Hladun at jhladun@wpusd.org or Kristen Beck at kbeck@wpusd.org.
Red Ribbon Week!
Red Ribbon Week is traditionally celebrated the last week or so of October. The goal is to help students consider their responsibility in making healthy choices, as well as to open the dialogue between parents and students, and students and teachers (in a developmentally appropriate way) about the negative impact drugs can have on achieving your dreams. This year, we'll be celebrating Red Ribbon Week by:
- students will be working with their art docents to make a Red Ribbon Week themed door decoration that will start in the classrooms and then migrate to the MPR for display
- inviting our first responders to our annual Carnoween on Fri., 10/26
- hosting a dress up spirit week (see below)
- watch for a special surprise to come home to commemorate the week!
Red Ribbon Dress Up Week!
- Monday: "Sock it to Drugs" (crazy socks)
- Tuesday: "Too Bright for Drugs" (neon/sunglasses)
- Wednesday: "Say Boo to Drugs" (Halloween costumes or spirited items)
- Children MUST be able to use the restroom independently if they come in costume
- No weapons, no masks, nothing that might be scary for younger kiddos (remember we have a TK on site!)
- Consider sending your child in spirited items and saving the costume for the evening!
- Thursday: "Give Drugs the Boot" (country western day)
- Friday: "Put a Stop to Drugs" (wear red)
