From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that everyone had a restful break and is well rested and ready for the school year. What a great start students and staff have had for the 2023 school year.

Everyone has settled in well and is off to a flying start. Our school community would like to welcome all of the new families that have started at St Columba’s this year. I am sure that it will not take long to settle into St Columba’s school life and be made most welcome by existing families. A big thank you must go to all the staff for working so hard in having the school ready for our students who started back at school on Wednesday.

Staffing

We welcome a number of new staff: Mrs King (PP &Yr 3), Mrs Crugnale and Mrs Kelly (Yr 5), Mr Harris (Phys Ed) and Miss Page (Kindy). We also welcome back Mrs Gorvorko (PP) from maternity leave. I am sure that they will all be made welcome by the school community.

Commitment Mass

Our Opening School Mass and Commitment Mass was today and we thank Monsignor for celebrating it with us and also blessing the student classrooms after Mass.

P&F School Garden

A huge thank you to Hayley Mitchell and the P&F for organising the new school garden over the Christmas break. An enormous amount of work was completed and we should have it going this term. We are just waiting on Greenworx to organise the reticulation. Photos will be circulated.

Year 6 Camp

We wish our Yr 6 students all the best as they head off to camp in Week 3 at Pinjarra. I am sure that they will have some wonderful stories to tell once they return.

School Grounds

A reminder to families that students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8:30am. St Columba’s provides supervision only from 8:30am until the bell goes at 8:50am. On entering the school grounds during the day all visitors will need to sign in at the front office.

Corresponding with Staff

A reminder that the school has a policy of staff not responding to correspondence prior to 8:00am and after 5:00pm Monday to Friday and not on weekends. Exceptions can be made if it is a matter of absolute urgency. The office is open between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

Student Medical Information

To ensure your child’s wellbeing, the school requires that parents provide up-to-date medical information in regard to any allergies or medical conditions. If your child is allergic to bee stings, nuts, shellfish, eggs etc and may suffer an allergic reaction, it is important that the school is informed. Your doctor will provide an anaphylaxis document with instructions that the school will follow. If your child suffers from asthma, a plan is also required. Anaphylaxis documents and asthma plans are to be presented to the office with medication to ensure that in an event of a medical incident, your child can be treated effectively. Any other medical information that may be relevant must also be presented in written form to the office. This information will remain confidential within the staff-teaching environment.

Parent Information Evening

Monday, February 6 is the Parent Information Evening. Two sessions will be held:

  • Session 1: 6.00pm
  • Session 2: 6:30pm

Sessions take place in the 'Green' classroom. If you have three children, you can make an appointment to see the teacher for the session you were unable to attend. The teachers will explain classroom procedures and expectations. It is a great opportunity for Parents and Carers to meet their child’s classroom teacher and have a clear understanding of what is happening in the classroom. Electronic copies of the parent booklets will be sent out next week.

A reminder, students will finish this term on Wednesday, April 5. Easter will also be celebrated on the first weekend of the school holidays.

God bless.

P&F News

Hello to everyone in the St Columba's Community and welcome to the new school year.

Introducing the P&F Committee

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Hayley Mitchell and I am your P&F President for 2023. I am joined by the lovely Gemma Bristow (Vice President), Mathew Smith (Treasurer) and Renee Methorst (Secretary). We are all humbled and honoured to be your P&F committee for 2023. Between us we have 11 kids, we work in completely different industries and are a true example of how the P&F can create new friendships. Side note: Only 1 out of 4 of us is a Freo Supporter.

Our theme this year

Being a Parent/Carer at St Columba's means you are already members of the P&F. Everyone in this community plays an important role and has a valuable contribution to make. We appreciate that everyone is different and we all lead very busy lives. Some of you will become actively involved in the P&F whilst others will support us by attending our social functions or fundraising activities throughout the year. We cannot exist without the contributions of both groups of parents. With that in mind, the P&F are proud to announce our theme for the year:

"To actively promote the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our children".

2023 Class Representatives

We are now looking for our 2023 Class Representatives. The role of the Class Rep is to attend P&F meetings, communicate back to class parents on outcomes of those meetings, work closely with the principal to achieve common goals, plan year or class social gatherings, welcome new families to the school and to assist the P&F committee with any fundraising events or one of the 4 main school events for this year (Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Grandparents Day and the Parents Only Friendraiser). We have an amazing community here at St Columba's filled with friendly and energetic parents who work together to provide amazing opportunities for our children. We strongly encourage you to be involved and look forward to meeting you all.

Please contact myself, your classroom teachers, or email us at pandf@stcolumbassp.wa.edu.au if you would like to take on this role

Community Picnic

You may have already seen some advertising for our first event for the year. Please join us for a community picnic on Sunday, 19 February from 2pm. We have arranged for some fun lawn games, face painting and free ice cream. BYO picnic rug, food and drinks. It will be great to see everyone there and a fantastic way for new families to come and get to know one another.
