Health and Physical Education Department
Mrs. Maxwell’s grants through the LMTSD Mini Grant Committee and Donorschoose.org were in full swing in 9th grade Physical Education Swimming Curriculum this past week.
Students at the high school are being introduced to Stand Up Paddle Boarding through their PE curriculum this year. Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) has tremendous health benefits that she is excited to bring to the students of LMTSD. SUP, as it is called for short, improves balance, is a total body workout, is low impact in nature, and reduces a person’s stress. In addition, it gives a person an alternative to a strength workout with the resistance utilized with the paddle through the water and prolonged standing and muscle control on the board. SUP also improves endurance. Paddle boarding provides improved cardiovascular benefits as its effects on the body are similar to running, cross-training and aerobics.
Additional benefits of Stand Up Paddle Boarding include the ability for it to be utilized in a variety of settings: a pool, lake, river, bay, or ocean for all participants. SUP can be modified for beginners and adapted students with prone, seated, kneeling and standing position with a shorter-handle paddle for a slow progression to standing for all participants.
This is a very exciting time for the LMHS physical education program as they continue to be cutting edge and introduce our students to lifelong physical education activities in our classrooms.
