Burleson High School Athletics
Lady Elk Volleyball
The opportunity was there Tuesday night for Burleson’s volleyball team to look past Everman and ahead to Friday’s District 5-5A match with Mansfield Legacy.
But the Lady Elks weren’t looking ahead as they swept the Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-4, 25-22, to stay in first place with two matches remaining.
“We kind of discussed before the game that we are going to take things one game at a time and that we will worry about Legacy after tonight,” Burleson coach D’Anna Newton said. “They really focused and got the job done tonight.”
Burleson (28-9, 11-1) hosts Legacy at 5:30 p.m. Friday night. The Lady Elks beat Legacy in five sets in the first half of district play. The Lady Elks, who already have a playoff berth wrapped up, play Tuesday at Arlington Seguin to close out district play.
The Lady Elks find themselves alone in first placed thanks to Legacy’s win over Granbury Friday night in four sets.
As Burleson was sweeping its way past Crowley Friday night, 25-19, 25-23, 25-18, Legacy was knocking Granbury out of tie for first place.
Everman (11-22, 2-10) gave Burleson all it could handle Tuesday night, Newton said.
“We played well that second game,” Newton said. “In the first game it took a while for us to wake up and put things together. In the third game, I made some changes and it threw us for a loop.”
The Lady Elks were losing the majority of the third game but were able to rally and complete the sweep.
As has been the case for most of the season, sophomore outside hitter Emily Rich led the Lady Elks with 17 kills. She also paced the team with four aces and 15 digs.
Sophomore setter Mia Smalls finished with 22 assists, three aces and eight digs.
Junior outside hitter Ellie Strebeck had six kills and two aces. Freshman libero Emma Dustin finished with 14 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Emily White had three blocks and one kill.
Friday’s game with Legacy will also be senior night for the Lady Elks. Honored on senior night will be defensive specialist Kyra Smith, right-side hitter Kenady Moore and setter Madi Lewis.
In the win over Crowley Friday night, Strebeck registered 18 kills and had two aces. Rich finished with 11 kills and three aces.
Smalls has 31 assists and 11 digs. Dustin finished with 13 digs and White had two blocks.
Elk and Lady Elk Golf
Elk and Lady Elk Cross Country
At the start of the season, Burleson cross country coach Curtis Enis knew his boys and girls teams would be going to regionals in October.
Thursday morning, the Elks and Lady Elks fulfilled Enis’ dream as each finished second at the District 5-5A championships. In a twist, both squads tallied 73 points while racing on the course at Burleson’s Chisenhall Fields.
After losing a third-place tiebreaker to Joshua last season, the Elks finished second. Centennial won the district title with 18 points and Granbury was third with 81 points.
“I thought our kids ran extremely well,” Enis said. “I was really happy with both squads. They deserved to go to regionals considering how hard they worked this summer. They have been dedicated and a fun group to coach.”
Junior Elias Word finished seventh in a time of 16 minutes, 40.24 seconds while junior Chris Smith placed 10th in a time of 16:42.26. The pair qualified for regionals last season as individuals.
“It feels amazing to be going to regionals as a team,” Word said. “That was the goal we set at the start of the season.”
Junor Adrian Reyes was 16th in a time of 17:32.51. Junior Will Stevenson finished 18th in a time of 17:42.54. Freshman Ace Garcia placed 22nd in a time of 17:55.91. Sophomore Isaac Smith was 28th in a time of 18:16.45 and senior Andrew Cranford was 31st in a time of 18:32.62.
The Lady Elks, who finished third at district last season, topped Grabury by eight points for second place. Centennial won the district crown with 34 points. The Lady Elks will be making their third consecutive trip to regionals.
Junior Meadow Renfro finished fourth in a time of a 19:52.40. Sophomore Emily Tebo placed ninth in a time of 20:24.84.
“I’m proud of myself. My goal going into the race was to finish fourth and that’s what I did,” Renfro said. “I’m so glad that we are going as a team to regionals.”
Sophomore Briyanna Barajas was 15th in a time of 20:54.77. The next two Lady Elks to finish were freshman. Avery Wang placed 20th in a time of 21:03.52 and Maggie Prewitt was 25th in a time of 21:20.10. Sophomore Keila Juarez placed 28th in a time of 21:48.76 and junior Kassedi Zapata was 36th in a time of 23:09.65.

Elk Football
9th Grade:
Both teams beat Everman! Keep up the good work Elks!
Varsity:
It was a game between the Elks and Bulldogs, but it featured a monkey wrench - as in the one that was thrown into the District 5-5A Division II playoff chase.
Everman's 40-35 upset of Burleson at Burleson ISD Stadium left both teams in the midst of the wild postseason chase that has five teams separated by a game between third and fourth place.
While Aledo (5-0) and Centennial (5-1) are 1-2, the race gets extremely tight with Cleburne (3-2), Midlothian (3-2), Burleson (3-3), Everman (2-3) and Waco University (2-3) in a virtual logjam with three weekends left in the regular season.
For the Elks (5-3 overall), Friday’s loss was a third straight. Everman (2-5 overall), meanwhile, had its largest scoring output of the season, having scored just 50 points in its first six games.
"We've got to let these kids feel it, mourn a little bit, and then we have to focus on winning these last two games," Burleson coach Gary McElroy said. "We've still got a really good football team, and we can still make the playoffs if we go out and win the next two."
The Elks travel to Midlothian Friday and, after an off week, finish the regular season at home against Cleburne, both games kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
The Elks appeared to have taken control of the game after taking a 35-21 lead on a 21-yard touchdown run by Jarrett Austin 15 seconds into the final quarter. It was his second TD of the game, the first giving the Elks an early 7-0 advantage. He finished the evening with a game-high 173 yards on 23 carries.
His second touchdown came after the Elks took over on the Everman 21 following a bad snap and a 28-yard loss on a punt attempt.
"He had a great game. We have two really good running backs with him and Caleb (Lewis), and Jarrett had the hot hand tonight. He got in the flow," McElroy said. "That's a great 1-2 punch to have back there, and when we get that kind of game, we're tough."
Lewis also scored a touchdown, from 8 yards out, to put the Elks on top 14-0 with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter.
However, Everman was far from finished despite the mishap that could have been perilous. The Bulldogs pulled to within 35-28 on Jyden Hollie's 40-yard run with 9:05 remaining. Hollie would then score the winning touchdown with 4:54 to play on a 55-yard run, though the try for two points would fail.
In between was a crucial interception returned 16 yards for a touchdown by Deandre Toliver with 8:08 to play. Though the extra point was blocked and Burleson still led 35-34, momentum had clearly shifted to the Bulldogs.
"We just shot ourselves in the foot in the fourth quarter," McElroy said. "We had opportunities throughout the game to put them away, and we just didn't. Now, we just need to win these next two games."
Hollie ended the game with 125 yards on 10 carries.
Earlier in the game, Everman's James Brooks tied the game at 21 at the half with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown in the closing 15 seconds of the second quarter. It came after the Elks had driven to the Bulldogs' 18 following a 56-yard touchdown pass from Everman quarterback Antonio Little to Keonte Lusk.
Little completed three passes on the evening for 127 yards, but two went for touchdowns, including a 67-yarder to Caleb Lester to make the score 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Burleson quarterback Jacob Amador threw a 4-yard touchdown to Carson Hallack for a 21-7 lead, and his 2-yard scoring run put the Elks up 28-21 late in the third quarter.
On the drive leading to Amador's TD throw, Everman was penalized four times for a personal foul and once for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bulldogs finished with 14 penalties for 137 yards, while the Elks were flagged six times for 50 yards.
The Elks finished with 229 yards rushing on 43 carries. They also got 74 yards passing from Amador, while Jacob Moss and Aden Anderson each caught two passes for 36 and 30 yards, respectively.
Defensively, the Burleson defense forced three turnovers. Calvin Williams and Iver Macaulay each had an interception, and Hallack recovered a fumble.
