Monthly Mudbug Memo
Sorrento Primary School Newsletter: October 2022
Message from the Principal's Office
Hello, October! Can you believe that we are well into fall already? We have had a great and exciting start, and October is when we seem to really settle into the comforts that come with cooler weather as well as familiarity with school routines. We are approaching the end of our first nine weeks grading period, followed by a nice little Fall Break, with Parent Teacher Conference Day right around the corner on Monday, October 24. I encourage you to take advantage of this day so that you can remain informed about your child's progress. Your child's teacher will send home an invitation in the coming week.
Parent-teacher conferences are one of the most useful tools that we have as a parent and teacher team to ensure that your children are getting the most from their education. Parents can get the lowdown on how their children are doing, and teachers want to make sure they communicate everything a parent needs to know about their teaching style and how the child is performing in school — but all in a 15-minute block of time. It is suggested that perhaps you come to your meeting with some questions in mind in order to get a clear picture of our child's progress. Below are some suggestions, but feel free to develop your own so that you can obtain the information you seek:
Ask and answer questions about your child’s life:
- May I tell you a little about my child?
- May I tell you about what’s going on at home?
- How is my child doing socially?
- How is my child doing emotionally?
Ask about your child’s academic performance:
- What are my child’s academic strengths and weaknesses?
- Is my child performing on grade level?
- What do the academic performance assessments mean?
- Are there any particular areas in which my child is struggling?
Questions to ask if your child is having trouble in school:
- May I share a concern?
- Can you fill me in on a particular situation?
End with these important questions:
- How can I help at home to support what you’re doing in the classroom?
- What’s the best way to communicate with you?
Again, these are merely suggestions, but they may prove helpful when preparing for your meeting. By working together, we can help all students reach their individual potential so that our school vision can indeed become a reality: Through a safe and respectful environment, with the support of our families and community, Sorrento Primary School will build a social and academic foundation for students so they may become responsible citizens and future leaders within our society.
Did you know that we have included a heavy emphasis on social emotional learning in our daily lessons? Yes, social emotional learning has a huge impact on student success! Last school year, many of our teachers engaged in professional development around how to embed social emotional learning into their unit plans, and we've seen so much put into action. Additionally, our guidance counselor teaches specific skills to students on topics such as: coping mechanisms for different emotions, how to be a good friend, appropriate ways to express disagreement, and many more.
We are invested in our students and will continue to find creative ways to guide them on their own paths to success! Here's to an outstanding October!

Speaking of lunch...Parents are now able to join their children for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning the week following Labor Day. :) These assigned days were determined at the district level to ensure consistency across primary schools. If joining your child for lunch, please check in at the school office a few minutes prior to your child's lunch time. Please understand that meals for parents are subject to availability from the supply chain. So, you may not be able to actually eat. However, you are welcome to sit with your child for lunch. Also, a few details since it has been so long since we have been able to do this...
-parents may not go to the classroom with the student before or after lunch.
-students must return to class with their teacher at the scheduled time to leave the cafeteria.
-no photography of any other students than your own child (even in the background please)
-teachers cannot accommodate a parent-teacher conference while supervising their students at lunch. Please schedule those for another day/time.
-fast food or restaurant food is not permitted in our dining area. All lunches from home must be brought in a personal lunch box/bag and free of logoed wrappers. This is a federal mandate for school cafeterias.

Mudbug Madness:
During the month of September, we had 3 opportunities for students to cash in their dojo points for Mudbug Madness. Some students chose to redeem their points for a “Treat from the Principal” which included a bag of Famous Amos cookies and a juice box. Our next Treat with the Principal for October is November 2! See pic below.
Mudbug of the Month:
On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, one student from each homeroom was nominated as the “Mudbug of the Month” These students exhibited our school-wide expectations of being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe and had the opportunity to eat a donut and visit with the other students. See pic below!
Q1 Dojo Bash: Mudbug Tailgate Dojo Bash
The Quarter 1 Dojo Bash is scheduled for Friday, October 28, 2022. In order for students to attend, they must have an 80% or above on dojo and no infractions.
