Greeting Shaw Montessori!

This week urban planning graduate students from ASU worked with some of our 4-8 grade students. In a collaboration with the City of Phoenix they hope to create and implement a strategy for engaging youth in the City's ongoing general plan process as the City updates its 20–30-year vision for Phoenix. Our students enjoyed discussing 5 distinct areas: Connecting people and places, building a sustainable desert city, strengthening our local economy, celebrating our diverse communities, creating an even more vibrant downtown. These facilitated focused activities and conversations helped students develop and communicate their ideas of future possibilities for their tomorrow.

Wishing you the best,

Principal Engdall

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

The goats finally went back to Maya’s Farm this week. They loved their visit to Shaw Montessori. The students were equally smitten by the goats. Next year we will get more visiting goats or possibly try some new creatures.

We wrapped our discussion about goats and caught up on some garden projects. We cleaned chicken coops, harvested veggies, amended garden beds, turned compost and ate some edible plants. Some of the edible plants that the students sampled were nasturtium, calendula, violas, shungiku and red amaranth. It was a lot of fun walking through the annual garden bed and sampling all the random goodies.

LAST WEEK FOR BOTTLE CAPS! GET YOUR BOTTLE CAPS IN! I WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER OF THE COMPETITION IN THE NEXT NEWSLETTER!

Here is my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office, except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bottle cap bin.

We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.

Thanks Will and Dhruv for the paver donations!

Mr. Moench

Spring Carnival

Big picture

It has been a few years since the Carnival has happened at Shaw, due to Covid and the world being somewhat turned upside down! But it's back! And we would love to have you help make it better than ever! There will be games, bounce houses, food trucks, some reptiles and crafts! We need the help of parents to be able to pull this off and get the Shaw community all out to have a good time. We have a sign up link for you HERE for you to look over and see where you can put your name down, the date is Friday March 3rd, from 4-7! Sign up to volunteer for part of it then participate in the rest! We are not charging for this event, it is absolutely FREE, which is AMAZING, you will just need to pay for food along the way! Amazing K's Burgers and Pearls Mini Donuts Food Trucks will be there to keep your tummies happy, along with a popcorn stand and snow cone machine! Please help make this a most memorable event of the year! Don't hesitate to reach out to me at jeshellerparker@gmail.com or Heather if you have any questions at hrvittori@gmail.com

Thank you in advance for making this the event of the year!

"Beloved Shaw Community,

Happy Black History Month from our Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion Committee! Did you know that Shaw is located in one of the historically Black neighborhoods in downtown Phoenix? We have put together a Black History Month media challenge for Shaw Families :) We have gathered some articles, videos, books, and movies and invite your family to select one to explore together. This is a living google document so feel free to add any family favorites too!

We also would like to acknowledge with the SuperBowl in town, the issue of cultural appropriation is still a painful point of tension for Indigenous communities. Here is our living google document resource for parents around cultural appropriation educational resources. This weekend is a great chance to open up the conversation again with your kids.

We want to hear from you! All of you! Our Survey is still live and we want your feedback on your experiences as a Shaw family. Your voice matters! Here are our survey links, only about 5 questions, please take the time <3
