Excellence in Instruction: Lesson Closure and DOL's
Goal# 1: Increase overall student achievement by implementing a tightly aligned curriculum across all grade levels.
This week, our focus is on ensuring we have alignment across the campus in the following areas:
-Lesson Closure and DOL's
Every full lesson cycle should conclude with a summation of the important concepts taught and learned and a DOL activity to gather student mastery data. Please check out the strategies below to consider when planning your closure and DOL activity, as well as an article that highlights the importance of lesson closure and DOL's! I can not wait to share with pictures examples of evidence of effective lesson closure and DOL activities!
TEI 1.4 DATA USAGE: Analyzes and integrates student performance data to inform instructional decisions
Write the Exemplar: Set the bar for excellence
Script out the ideal written responses you want students to produce during independent practice
Align independent practice to the rigor of the upcoming interim assessment
TEI 2.3 DELIVERY: Explains instructional content clearly and cohesively
Independent Practice: Set up daily routines that build opportunities for students to practice independently
Implement and review a longer independent practice and/or a daily Exit Ticket (brief final mini-assessment aligned to your objective) to see how many students mastered the concept

SEL Weekly Classroom Tip - Practice Gratitude
The Brain on Gratitude
-Priti Ahuja
A couple of years ago, I met up with a friend who is a corporate executive, and she told me about her experience with a life coach she hired to help her bring some calm and balance into her life. The coach had recommended that she keep a gratitude journal and write down five things that she was grateful for every day. Hmm, I thought, my friend is shelling out a pretty penny for this ineffectual and fruitless advice, but I didn’t tell her that! Little did I know, there was new research showing that actively practicing gratitude is linked to improved physical, mental and emotional well-being. Practicing gratitude in an intentional way actually re-wires our brains to think more positively and combat stress. Read more here: Greater Good Science Center Gratitude.
Morning Meeting Focus: Greeting
Around the nation, and even around the world, classrooms are abounding with laughter and connection through morning meetings. Here is a video from Providence, Rhode Island Providence Schoolwide Morning Meeting.
Step one of morning meeting is greeting. Here is one for you to try this week:
Greeting: Knock Knock (with last names)
Have students sit in a circle. Script is as follows:
Student: “Knock knock”
Class: “Who’s there?”
Student: “Mike”
Class: “Mike who?
Student: “Mike Smith”
Class: “Good Morning Mike!”
Repeat for each student (and teacher).

The front office staff may place items in your box throughout the day, so checking it at the end of the day or the morning will ensure you have all current communication.
