Keeping Up with Comm Arts

~ September 18, 2023 ~

Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!

Just a reminder that we are hosting an Open House on Wednesday, September 20th, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Taft Auditorium. After a short PTSA meeting, we will be released to visit classrooms. It will be a free-flowing event, meaning you may visit each teacher in any order. You do not have to follow your child(ren)'s natural schedule. If you want to visit all of the Taft classes first since you are starting over there, that is fine - or vice versa. You will have around 5 minutes of information from each teacher and then move to the next classroom. Make sure you get through the schedule by 8 p.m. because our teachers need to go home and get ready for the next day. Grades were captured on Friday, September 15th, at 4:45 to be displayed on Monday, September 18th via HAC. Please review grades with your child(ren). Just a friendly reminder, students must maintain passing grades and wonderful behavior along with attendance to remain a Comm Arts student. Thank you so much for being our partners in education. We can't wait to see you in person again!

Wednesday, September 20th, is a Professional Learning Time in the morning. Teachers will be in meetings before school. Tutoring with teachers will not be available.

PSAT Updates

Northside ISD is hosting a College Board Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, or PSAT, on Wednesday, October 11th. The PSAT/NMSQT exam is the route of entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program for 11th-grade students. For more details, click here.

The PSAT is optional this year for 10th and 11th graders. Sophomores who choose to participate must register by September 20th to participate and pay a $20 testing fee. There is a reduced fee of $10 for students who receive free or reduced lunch. Juniors, the district is covering the fee for your exam, but you must sign up. All 9th graders will be automatically registered to take the PSAT.

Comm Arts students will have a separate registration process from Taft High School. In order to register, students should click on the following link: www.TotalRegistration.net/PSAT/446139. To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. The student's email is their NISD email provided by the district.

Here are the important dates for the registration process:

Our drive will start this Friday, September 15, and run through September 28. Below is a list of items they need. Please tell your students/clubs/organizations that the gently used donations need to adhere to the school dress code. This is not a time to just clean out the closet and donate EVERYTHING. :)

They also need brand-new socks and underwear too! (all sizes because the entire family gets clothing)

Common Attendance Codes

High School Credits: Students are required by law to be in attendance for 90% of each class. If students' absences exceed 90%, they will lose credit for their class unless corrected through Attendance Recovery.

Health vs. EADN (Excused Absences - Non-Health -Doctor Note): Health absences do not count against a student's attendance. However, a student must be on campus for part of the school day and bring in a doctor's note. A doctor's note counts as an excused absence if a student is absent for the whole school day.

Excused Absences (EA) vs. Unexcused Absences (UA): All absences count towards the allotted seven absences for the fall semester/10 absences for the spring semester. If a student's attendance case is sent to court, a committee will consider how many absences were excused and unexcused.

Covid: Please note that student remote conferencing, contact tracing, and "COVID" absences are no longer available. Students who miss school due to COVID-19 need to bring a parent note to receive an excused absence. For more information, refer parents to the COVID-19 Information page: https://www.nisd.net/schools/health/covid.

College Visit: Juniors and seniors are allotted two days per year to visit colleges. For these absences to be excused, students need to follow the required procedures. The form can be found below.

Wise Words from Dr. Rosales & Mrs. Skidmore

Progress Reports are posted on Monday, September 18th; this will be a time for students to notice their current academic standing and progress. Depending on the grades your student may see, the results may create some anxiety. Before anxiety can get a hold of your student and consume them with feelings of discouragement, here are some medically reviewed ideas on how your teen can navigate and manage anxiety, according to Nemours Teen Health. 5 Ways to Cope With Anxiety (for Teens) - Nemours KidsHealth

Part of managing anxiety includes having a growth mindset. Here are some helpful tips for parents to teach their students to develop a growth mindset.
