News and Updates from FSMA
THANK YOU!
Health Class
The community built within the 6th grade Health Room is like no other. Students come together to discuss problems occurring at home, school, on social media, and with peers. They offer one another advice and a vast amount of personal experience. The class has become a sounding board of sorts for students seeking solutions.
Recently, students worked diligently on creating the Up-stander Poster Campaign. This campaign was a student driven idea to help our school community report any unkind acts, rather than being a bystander. Their posters are currently hanging throughout the building.
Shofuso
The 2nd and 3rd graders enjoyed a culturally amazing day at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Philadelphia. This was a special event celebrating Japanese Children's Day. Activities included a tour of a traditional Japanese home, Hina Fan dance, Kamishibai (Japanese street theatre and storytelling), Koi Nobori carp wind socks making, Kimono dressing, and Taiko drumming. While the weather may not have been ideal (a little rainy in the garden, it was still an amazing day!)
Junior Gardeners
On Friday, a group of "Master Gardeners" from the University of Delaware came to visit our K/1 classes and taught them about the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly. The gardeners brought real live milkweed plants to share with students, which was a favorite of our children. They also taught us that there are four growth stages of a Monarch butterfly's life; egg, larva, chrysalis, and adult and students watched an accelerated video of a caterpillar hatching and becoming a butterfly - so cool! And now, our students are considered "Junior Gardeners."
