Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
November 6th-10th
What's Going On This Week:
Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will review the life cycle of a plant and how to classify plants (Lessons 1 and 2). Students will get to explore different plants outside during our classifying lab, as well as at the Greenway on our field trip. Originally I had said the quiz on Lessons 1 and 2 would be on Thursday, but because of the field trip and a day for Junior Achievement, I am moving the quiz to Friday 10th.
Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will continue to learn about the original 13 colonies. Students will learn the differences between the Northern, Middle, and Southern colonies. A quiz over this information, as well as the first European Settlements (New France, New Spain, New England, New Netherlands) will be on Tuesday 14th.
Mrs. Thurston's ELA/Math: This week we are continuing our new unit, Reading the Weather, Reading the World. In writing, we will continue our new unit, Boxes and Bullets: Personal and Persuasive Essays. Spelling words have started back up this week! Tests will be given each day of the week. Each group has its own day! This week in math we will review 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and start Long Division.
Ms. Harris' GT ELA/Math: This week in GT, we will start long division. This is a complicated concept for students to master, so please be patient while we work on it in class. They will need a few days of practice to really grasp the steps of how to divide larger numbers. While later in the year we may teach the standard algorithm, we will start with the partial quotients method. This does a great job of breaking down long division into manageable and understandable steps. In ELA, we will finish text features. Students will also have time to work on their Expert Exhibit outline and their Genius Hour Passion Projects. Students should have be researching both, and have their two sources on their expert by Tuesday 7th.

Other Information
- GT Parents: Students are starting a two month long research project called "Expert Exhibit." There was an orange flyer that went home last week. Students are researching an expert in a field that they are passionate about. They will then create a 5 paragraph research paper about this person, as well as a speech and biography poster. Most of this will be done in class, so no worries. What they will need to do, though, is create a costume/props that would help them best represent their famous person. Then on December 15th, they will present their speeches dressed in costume as if they are that famous person to their schoolmates and parents. Please let me know if you have any questions about this GT project.
