PATRIOTIC OBSERVANCE
On April 24, 1898, Spain declared war on the United States, followed by a U.S. declaration of war on the 25th. The conflict ultimately began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The war was mostly one-sided leading to the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10th, 1898 signifying the ending of the Spanish-American War. In it, Spain renounced all claim to Cuba, ceded Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States and transferred sovereignty over the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.
