From the Principal's Office
The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. The American child consumes media through screens 1200 hours a year on average. As education professionals, we see the result of this shift towards increased screen time (and it's not good). Imagine if we could shift their time back towards a more productive and healthy outcome. I think it's worth a shot for every family. Childhood goes by quickly. We don't want to lose a large chunk of it to screen time. At the very least there should be a balance between the real world and the virtual world for each child. It's worth your time to play outside!
This website is a great resource if you are interested in more information and ideas about screentime, outdoor play, and child development.
This Kick-Off packet from their website is chock full of ideas and resources for your outdoor time!
Upcoming Events
Read-a-Thon will be this Wednesday! Keep working on those Read-a-Thon sponsors...this is our only fundraiser. It pays for field trips and student incentives.
Thank you for your support!
Students should come to school in their pajamas ready to read and listen to great books! We will have guest readers and plenty of time for students to read independently for the Read-a-Thon. Your child's teacher may send more information soon!

Kindness BINGO
Have each member of the family fill out a bingo board with different ways you like others to show Kindness to you. Place each bingo board somewhere accessible for the whole family such as the refrigerator. Then, when someone commits an act on your board, color it in! Be sure to celebrate when the family has collaborated to get bingo! Some ideas may include:
- Help with a household chore
- Spend quality time together with no distractions (tv, phone, etc.)
- Play a game together
- Give a hug
- Write a card or letter saying what you love about someone
Please Help Us Keep Our School Open
Our McKinley families have been wonderful about this policy! Thank you for helping us keep everyone in our school in good health!
