Blevins Broadcast

Room # 135 News!

Welcome to Mrs. Blevins' Online News Broadcast!

Our classroom stresses the importance of working at one's full potential. The students are given opportunities to do their personal best during every activity. In order to determine your child's needs, continuous assessment takes place. All activities are designed so that every student in our classroom is working at a challenging and rewarding level. Throughout the school year, I promote working together to create an open teacher-parent-student communication relationship. I feel it is in your child's best interest if we work together and stay in contact with one another in order for him/her to be successful! Feel free to navigate the Blevins Broadcast at your convenience where you will find classroom news, slideshows, upcoming events, our week at a glance, a note from the teacher, and other pertinent information.

Check out Ashton and Max as this week's news anchors!

Flushing Middle School Orientation!

Our 6th graders toured the middle school on Monday this week! They seem like they're growing up as 7th graders already! Your child received a registration form which should have been due by today, Friday, March 6th! Ask your child how they enjoyed the middle school and what fun classes they want to sign up for! This is a time where the transition is very exciting for everyone!

This week, we have completed Topic 12 and started Topic 13: Solving Proportions. Students continue to enjoy pointing out mistakes when we practice "My Favorite No!" Students will continue to gain essential understanding when fixing problems they got wrong. Next week, we will continue working on Topic 13. Students are aware that there is a quiz after every two lessons. Please review a little bit each night with your 6th grader for a little practice with an adult can be reassuring and beneficial!

Social Studies

We discovered Canada's climate, land use, and natural resources. We watched interesting United Streaming Videos to enhance visual representation of Canada's landscape and resources. Ask your 6th grader, what natural resource is Canada known best for! Next week, we will finish sec. 3 and start reviewing for the Ch. 1 Test on Friday, March 6th.

Students are now placed in 6 groups: Assassination of Malcom X, Assassination of JFK, 9/11, Titanic, Civil War, and MLK's Selma march to Montgomery. Ask your child which group they're in and what questions they formulated to begin researching next week! Students are learning many strategies for descriptive summary writing to put their historical event in chronological order. We had many wonderful class discussions about the historical events! We have been using the Chrome Books in class. Students need to be familiar with using the Chrome Books due to the M-STEP test (the new MEAP) being online. Next week, we will start categorizing our information that we will be researching for our historical event summary. We are continuing to work on Unit 9, focusing on commas and complex/compound sentences.

Word Study

Today we took the "tract = pull" quiz. Next week, we will be reviewing "struct = build." The lists for each week may be found on my webpage under the Word Study tab. Quizzes are always on Friday. Please remember to use Login as...username: centralcats password: flushing.

We did it! We finished Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry! We focused on plot, and original sentences. Next week, we will be taking the Test and watching the movie! We will also be comparing and contrasting the movie with the novel.

Students received their two Monthly Reading Logs for the month of March. One is an "At Home Reading Log." Students need to complete and fill out the log after reading 20 minutes everyday. The same rule applies for their "At School Reading Log." They are responsible for filling this out after IDR/Daily 4 time in class. Both are DUE on Wednesday, April 1st with a parent signature. They are also available on my teacher webpage for your reference. We have built better stamina time coming back from break and we are continuing to build on top of that time every day!

Make sure your child is also completing the yellow Reading Log Challenge for March is Reading Month! They will have a chance to surprise Mr. Steinhaus!

Cat's for a Cure!

This October, Mrs. Blevins and the 6th grade team promoted a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This school wide event involved a D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read), and a t-shirt sale. We made over $500 for the ACS! We fight for a cure together!
