CTE Funding Update
The discussion of CTE funding has been tabled to the January Meeting. Your efforts are making a difference. Keep up the good work and continue the following: We will need representatives to speak about our value on that day. Please e-mail if you can attend. January 15, 2020 E-mail and call your representatives Invite them to your classroom. Please make sure if you do this that you are highlighting our best traits and value of what we teach. Ex. Don't be baking cookies in nutrition, etc. Think about all the important things we teach and the relationship to employability skills Reference the below e-mail. Family and Consumer Sciences supporting network,
We have recently learned that the CTE foundational courses will not be funded for the 2020-2021 school year.
These courses that will not be funded next year are all Family and Consumer Sciences Courses. They include:
-Nutrition and Wellness
-Child Development
-Interpersonal Relationships
These courses impact over 50,000 students a year. Just because they are not funded, it does not mean they cannot be offered; but, with the constraints of school budgets, we are very concerned about elimination of these critical courses in some schools. Additionally, we're concerned that this is another way that the funding essential to support comprehensive high schools is being reduced and re-allocated.
We feel this is detrimental to students and to the value and strength of CTE programs. These foundational courses provide essential employability skills, career exploration with career standards as a critical component of all these courses, and life literacy skills that not only help students become successful citizens and community members but that also save costs for employers. Additionally, the skills taught in these courses are becoming even more critical as they are a huge component of social/emotional health, wellness, and strong family foundations. These skills all help CTE by providing a baseline for students to develop as a person along with skills and dispositions needed to be a successful employee. And finally, these courses are the introductory courses for pathways in high demand high wage career pathways.
We would appreciate any support you could provide by doing the following actions: 1. Write a letter to the State Board of Education stating your support for these foundational courses in Family and Consumer Sciences. Consider providing an oral statement protesting the elimination of funding for these courses. If you can attend, please let us know.

4. Contact the Department of Workforce Development and state your support for reinstating the funding that is essential to support these courses.
E-mail Elizabeth Meguschar at emeguschar@dwd.in.gov
5. Finally, it is important to review and understand the funding levels so you can have conversations with your administration about how to adjust your courses, scheduling and what pathways are offered.
