Counselor's Newsletter
Greetings WMS parents,
We hope this message finds your families in good health and spirits. It is now time for the second verification of student class selections for the 2020-2021 school year! You will only have two more opportunities to request changes for next school year. Please review the course selections with your student.
Schedules are available to view in HAC for both the fall and spring semester of next school year.
To view them in HAC:
1. Log Into HAC (Home Access Center)
2. Click on the "Classes" Icon
3. On the left side, Click on "Schedule"
4. Scroll down to view the course requests.
If there are any concerns on your student’s request, please let us know by completing the attached google form by the end of the day Monday, April 13th.
Changes to core classes (i.e. On Level to PreAP), corrections such as having a core class listed twice or missing, or an elective that your student has taken previously are important to make now.
If your student has had the following classes removed from their verification, it is due to limitations of staffing and class size:
Spanish 1
Principles of Hospitality and Tourism
Intro Spanish 6
Intro to Tech Theater
Please take the time to review both semesters to ensure that we have an accurate understanding of student's class preferences. Keep in mind, requests are still tentative at this time, and changes may need to happen due to specialized classes students need or the constraints of the master schedule.
We look forward to a time when we will all meet again, in person.

Autism Awareness Month
It’s Autism Awareness Month and we want to salute the contributions of people with autism, as well as the families and professionals who support and empower them to thrive.
We know how hard it will be for the autism community to get deserved attention during the coronavirus crisis. This week, childmind.org will feature specific resources for supporting kids on the spectrum whose schools and services have been suspended, as well as suggestions for ABA providers working with parents remotely. They also have a new comprehensive Parents Guide to Autism, covering the earliest signs to the latest therapies and more.
And finally, Wednesday, at 4:30pm, you are invited to join a Facebook Live chat with Bethany Vibert, PsyD, an autism expert at the Child Mind Institute who will answer your questions about supporting kids with autism during this crisis.
Science News
Next week we will be focusing on ecological succession. Ecological succession is the gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time. Nothing remains the same and habitats are constantly changing. There are two main types of succession, primary and secondary. Students will complete the choice board which is uploaded in google classroom. Thank you for the participation in our zooms and completing assignments! Have a great weekend!
Eighth grade will continue with a two week lesson on the electromagnetic. The electromagnetic spectrum is used to identify the chemical structures of the stars. Take a moment and try loading an app called NIGHT SKY, great family time at night. Thank you for all the participation in our classrooms and zoom. Please let us know if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!
RELA News
7th Grade RELA - students will start reading “Get in the Zone: The Psychology of Video Game Design.” We will dive deeper into our exploration of point of view, specifically subjective and objective point of view. Please continue to check Google Classroom. We will have Zoom meetings every Tuesday and Wednesday to provide mini-lessons for students. Stay healthy and safe.
8th Grade RELA - we will continue our new unit entitled “Finding Your Path.” The essential question for the current unit is “How do your teenage years prepare you for adulthood?” We will recognize National Poetry Month in conjunction with our current unit by analyzing poems, short stories, and informational texts related to the theme. Next week we will focus on figurative language in poetry. Please continue to check the Continued Learning Hub for our Zoom meeting times and weekly student learning opportunities. Also continue to check Google Classroom for important announcements and assignments.
Math News
Our student-teacher engagement piece, the zoom meetings, are being held to provide personal instruction for students on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. See our continue learning hub on the WMS website to see the schedule for your student. Google Classrooms also have videos, assignments and activities to make sure students have the instruction they need to support our last nine week's content. Please ensure students are watching teaching videos and completing their assignments every week.
Grade Level Topics for the week of April 13th
6th Grade - Area of Trapezoids
7th Grade - Similar Figures

IXL's research supports 30 minutes a day of practice on recommended skills in math in IXL can have a significant positive impact on future student achievement. Please help us support our lions by being in IXL frequently during this time at home. (IXL is also open to all Algebra students to use as an extra resource as well!)
We hope you and your families enjoy this Good Friday holiday with your families while staying safe and healthy.
Social Studies News
Topic: Religion (Islam)
“Islam brings hope and comfort to millions of people in my country, and to more than a billion people worldwide. Ramadan is also an occasion to remember that Islam gave birth to a rich civilization of learning that has benefited mankind.” - George Bush message on Eid Al-Fitr 12/5/2002
We will continue our Middle East Region Unit with a study on religion in that region. Please know that we are here to teach facts and not opinions. Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity, with about 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. Students will continue Zoom class meetings on Tuesday/Wednesday and will experience opportunities to learn more about Ramadan (Muslims’ holy month of fasting) through videos, Quzzizz, and Brainpop.
7th Grade Texas History - This week in Texas History we will continue to create primary sources by documenting how the COVID 19 Virus is affecting our daily lives. Students are able to decide how they choose to document history. Encourage students to try to include new items in their journal. Take photos of how the COVID 19 Virus has impacted your family and the surrounding area. Caption the images and must be accompanied by a 5 sentence paragraph. Students will also have an opportunity to explore the Cowboy Era through an instructional video.
8th Grade U.S. History - will turn its focus to the Abolitionist Movement, which began during the mid 1800s. This was a movement by those wishing to rid the country of slavery. Many men and women fought and died to make their vision of a country without slavery come to llight. Students will have the opportunity to use multiple videos and biographies to assist them in discovering people such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman and many others. Students will have the task to select which significant individual they deem to have had the largest impact on the Abolitionist Movement.
