Firewise: Improving Access for Emergency Responders
A quick response to a wildfire is critical for saving your home. Firefighting personnel must be able to quickly locate and safely travel to your home. Emergency responders may not be familiar with your community, so highly visible signs are important to help them find their way.
You must also remember that fire trucks are larger and heavier than normal vehicles, it is essential that all access lanes are wide enough, have proper clearance and can support the weight of fire vehicles. Here are a few tips to help improve access to your property:
Street Signs
- At least 3-inches tall
- Words on a contrasting color background
- Made of reflective material
- Made of fire-resistant material
- Visible from both directions
Addresses
- Streets should be labeled, having different names and numbers.
- Your home should have its own house number and be in numerical order along your street.
- If your home is set back from the street, post your address at the end of your driveway where it is visible from the street.
- If multiple homes share a single driveway, post all addresses at the entrance from the street and at each appropriate intersection along the driveway.
Whether you live in a community with poorly labeled streets or at the end of a long dead end road, making sure emergency personnel can quickly locate and get to your home can increase your home’s chance of survival during a wildfire.

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD...
12,500 THREADFIN SHAD DEPOSITED INTO LAKE
On July 8th, 12,500 Threadfin Shad were deposited into our lake! Threadfin Shad are extremely delicate and must be handled with care. These shad were harvested from Tyler Fish Farms, loaded onto an oxygenated tank truck and transported directly to our lake to be discharged through a flexible pipe into the lake to avoid handling. This year, their tank truck had engine problems on the way to deliver our fish, but the dedicated Tyler Fish Farm staff quickly called a tow truck and still brought our delivery & released the shad from the bed of the tow truck!
These shad have proven to be excellent supplemental forage for large-mouth bass. They are a schooling fish and their tight schooling activity means that they can provide a great deal of food for the bass even though each individual shad may only be 3 to 4 inches long. A flurry of shad breaking the surface means that there are larger fish feeding on them from below.
BIG thanks to our Lake Management Committee for their work to help manage our lake to ensure it is healthy and producing excellent fishing opportunities for our community!

HOWDY NEIGHBOR!
MEET JERRY & VICKI WALKER!
Jerry & Vicki Walker have made Horseshoe Bend their home for 13 years. They bought their lot in HSB in August of 2008, built their home, and moved here permanently from Plano, Texas in April, 2009.
Vicki and Jerry have been married since 1981. Jerry has a son (David Walker), a daughter (Angela Walker Garcia), and 3 grandchildren. Vicki has a son (Mark Daniels) and two grandchildren. Jerry was in engineering sales for most of his career. Vicki was in secretarial positions and a homemaker. Jerry & Vicki shared that their past interests have included fishing, hunting and traveling, but they have pared that down to maintenance of their 10 acres here in HSB. As a special interest, Jerry has been tracing the Walker family tree for a few years now and has traced their family back to a Scottish immigrant (Isaac Walker) in 1721.
When asked what they love most about living in HSB, they shared, "We love the community, the people and the trees!"
Great neighbors = a great neighborhood! We are so happy Jerry & Vicki as part of our HSB community!
