School Mission
More than competency in the basic skills of reading, writing, and math, it is this school’s mission to nurture in each child:
The habit of creative independent thinking, a positive self-image, an attitude of social cooperation and moral responsibility, pride in self, community, state, and country, and
the ability to be a producer, not just a consumer, of Knowledge.
“In this school, we reach for the stars.”
Eat Breakfast at School!
Breakfast is served at school! School breakfast will give your child a healthy start to the day. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can learn more in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body.
Breakfast at school is affordable at only $1.35. If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. You can’t find a healthy breakfast at such a low cost anywhere else.
Help your child start the day right with school breakfast! Make sure they arrive before 7:45 to have enough time to eat.

Notice to Parents with Court Orders Affecting the Parent-Child Relationship
The Texas legislature passed a new law clarifying the Texas Family Code provision that sets out the rights and duties of parents when there is a court order affecting the parent-child relationship. The legislature clarified that “school activities”, as that term is used in the Family Code, includes, “school lunches, performances, and field trips.” Prior to the passing of this law, each Texas school district determined what activities were considered “school activities.” In compliance with the new law, effective at the beginning of this school year, when lunch is open to visitors, either parent may attend school lunch with his or her child, regardless of their period of possession, unless attending lunch is specifically prohibited by a court order. All parents are welcome to attend school performances. Field trips are limited to parents selected to serve as chaperones. If you have any questions or want to talk further, please call Mrs. Stewart or Mrs. Sciba.
Message from the Principal...
We have great news to share with you!
We are proud to tell you that Rice Elementary has earned a distinction from the State of Texas in Academic Achievement in Mathematics. Our school earned this distinction due to being within the TOP quartile amongst our comparison schools — for students who met or exceeded grade level mastery in all mathematics!
This year we are kicking off Social Emotional Lessons during our morning meetings. Students will be learning about Empathy, Conflict, Teamwork, Accountability, Emotional Control, Resiliency, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving. We will be sending short video clips or information each month so you can talk with your students about their learning.
We are proud of the work our students and staff do each and every day!!! Rice is the place to be!!!
Thank you for entrusting your child to us each day,
Malinda Stewart

Welcome back B.B. Rice Raccoons!
We are excited for the 2019/2020 school year!
This month we will be working on introducing our readers workshop, writers workshop and phonics workshop. We will be reading fiction books and working on good reader habits. For writing we will be working on narrative stories. In Math we will be working on data, place value up to 40, numeration along with coins, addition and subtraction to 5 . A great way to practice at home is counting down from 40. For Science we will be going over safety and properties of objects. For Social studies we will be learning rules, citizenship, and geography. Behavior folders will be sent home every night please make sure to sign and return. If you would like for your child to have breakfast at school please to have them here between 7:30-7:40. Please make sure to read every night!
Second Grade
Third Grade
Welcome to 3rd grade Rice Raccoons! We hope you had a nice and restful summer and we are so excited to see you back! If you are new to our school, welcome to Rice! We are going to be learning so much and look forward to a wonderful school year.
In Math, we will be studying place value up to 100,000. Please work with your child on the value of each digit. Ask them what the tens place, the hundreds place and so on are worth! For example, the digit 9 in the number 10,987 is worth 900! Please also continue to practice adding and subtracting within 20. We want our mathematicians to be fluent in this!
In Science, we will be discussing science safety and will begin working on properties and states of matter. Please be sure to return the signed science safety contract if you have not done so already!
In Social Studies, we are discussing our roles in the classroom and community of the school. The choices we make affect ourselves and others.
Your readers will be learning how to build a powerful reading life! We will choose just right books and dive into the genre of fiction. We will learn about character traits, story elements and retelling of stories. Your writers will begin to gather topics and compose a personal narrative.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's teacher! Thank you for your support!
Fourth Grade
Here are our 4th grade teachers; Ms. Simon, Mrs. Haugen, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Bowles, Mrs. Brummett, and Ms. Hargitay. We are settling into our routine and have established our classroom and homework expectations. Please make sure that your child is completing his/her homework and returning it daily. Your 4th grader has a Student Planner/Calendar that shows the week’s assignments, so be sure to ask your student about it.
We are excited about all the reading and writing opportunities this year. The focus will continue to be on comprehension and increased stamina for reading longer periods of time. We will be teaching our objectives through different reading genres, such as poetry, informational, drama, and fiction. Fourth grade is also a time of writing compositions in preparation for the Writing STAAR test. We are developing skills necessary to write both narrative and expository compositions. Writing complete sentences with elaboration and punctuation has been our major focus so far.
In math, students have been working on place value. Our students will be doing lots of computation practice in addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication. Memorization of facts is so important to be successful in solving multiple step problems and higher-level questions.
Our 4th grade scientists have been learning lab safety and thinking like a scientist and will begin studying matter.
In social studies, the students have been learning the symbols of Texas and will be reviewing their map skills in preparation for the study of the regions of our great state. Ask your student what he/she has learned about the U.S. Constitution!
Thanks for all you do to help your child be successful. This year we will not be scheduling parent/teacher conferences. Instead we are launching student led conferences, in which the students will be recording their strengths and areas of concern while using their data binder. There will be one recorded in fall and then in the spring. A message will be sent home for parents to be able to access their video. We are super excited to hand the ownership to the kiddos to help build their OWN success! More information will be coming about student led conferences! It takes all of us working together for a great 4th grade year!
From The Library...Ms. Parks
Welcome to those of you who are new to B. B. Rice and welcome back to those of you who are returning! We are expecting a wonderful year in the library! Our Rice Raccoons are avid readers and I know you will find tons of great books to read.
Parents are needed in the library. If you would like to volunteer your time, your child and your child’s librarian would appreciate it!
Please encourage reading at home. As your child’s reading comprehension improves, your child will be more successful in all aspects of learning.
***It’s that time again…BOOK FAIR TIME! ***We are so very excited to have the Scholastic Book Fair here at Rice the week of September 9th. Please be on the lookout for a flyer that will be sent home in Tuesday folders showcasing many of the books that will be available during our fair! Happy Reading
Nurse
Welcome back Rice Racoons! Just a friendly reminder that all medication must be brought to the clinic by a parent. Prescription medication should be in the original container with the child’s name and current instructions for administration. Over the counter medication should be in the original container with the child’s name. Please check the expiration date for all medication.
If you have a child in Kindergarten, please pack a complete change of clothes to leave in your child's backpack “just in case”.
Hope everyone has a happy and healthy 2019-2020 school year,
Michelle McLaren, RN
