Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
Hello from Language Arts!
In reading continue with our class novel, EMPTY. Last week we read chapters 1-4, which introduced our key characters, the setting, and began to give us some insight into the conflict soon to come. Students took a quick comprehension quiz on Friday to be sure we all had the basics. Most students were right where they should be with this, but there were a few who may need to do some re-reading to bring themselves up to speed. Each student has a book checked out in their name, so if they need it for overnight use that isn't a problem as long as it is returned each day. Along with finding out the next pieces of the plot, students will be on the look out for pieces of "evidence" that they could use to support various topics that will be presented to them. These skills will help them greatly as we continue to work on our R.A.C.E. Strategy.
We will also be taking a closer look at the Point Of View stories can be told from. Students will have the opportunity to put their own spin on things as we change up the POV in some well known stories, as well as our novel.
Our writing focus will be the continued review and reinforcement of the "R.A.C.E. writing strategy" . Students wrote their own responses to a quick question about one of our characters in the story on Friday. Those grades will be entered this week. Our early attempts at this may not be perfect, but we all should see consistent improvement.
This is something that they will utilize on all of their testing, as well as all through high school and beyond. The better they understand this strategy the easier it will be for them to be successful with their written responses.
In grammar, we continue working on our third root word set, "Before & After". I have placed the link for a STUDYSTACK in students Google Classroom. We will be taking a quick check quiz on these this next Thursday.
This is our seventh week of "Mountain Language". and we will have another quiz on these this Friday.
A quick reminder that your student should be reading independently each evening for approximately 20-30 minutes. If they have not already begun to focus on some independent reading each night, please encourage this practice. This is the primary homework they will have for language arts. Most students have completed their two choice readings for this quarter. If your child still has one or both of these grades missing, it is not too late, but time is closing in to get them done. Ask them to please see me to see what we can do.
Students should have their books with them for some independent practice time on a daily basis. We will be using their own choice readings to complete some of our other classroom activities on those days.
Science- Mrs. Madera
Last week we continued with our unit on States of Matter. Students tested on the phase change vocabulary and graph. We took notes in class on physical and chemical properties and physical and chemical changes. Students will have a quiz on this information on Friday. With the focus being on physical and chemical properties and changes, students will be conducting experiments in class to recognize real life examples that they see every day around them.
Later this week, students will be introduced to Atomic Theory. From here, we will be diving into the structure of the Atom and the Periodic Table of Elements.
Science homework will be to review notes and vocabulary each night.
The "Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes" Vocabulary can be found by visiting my Quizlet link below. https://quizlet.com/join/kRj6Jgpam

Mr. Frazier
This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will continue studying transformations. We will finish rotations Tuesday and begin dilations on Thursday. On Wednesday, we will complete a Formative Assessment Lesson covering Transformations in the Coordinate Plane. The purpose of the assessment is to enrich each students’ understanding of rigid transformations and provide data in regards to which areas need to be reviewed before moving forward.
Looking forward to next week, the students will take their first Master Assessment (MA) for the school year. The MA covers our study of triangles (interior/exterior angles), parallel lines cut by a transversal and transformations. All MA’s average together and count a total 15 percent of their grades. I highly encourage students to begin preparing for the MA by studying past notes and study guides. I have also posted a Transformation Study Guide in Google classrooms. It will give you great insight in regards to what is expected of the students during the MA. The students will be provided a hard copy to work on in class and at home.

Translation: A transformation that moves each point of a figure the same distance and same direction
Reflection: A transformation that produces a mirror image of a the original figure over a line of reflection
Rotation: A transformation that turns a figure around a center of rotation
Dilation: A transformation that enlarges or reduces a figure
Image: A shape or figure after a transformation; the new figure
Pre-image: A shape or figure before a transformation; the original figure
Orientation (of a figure): The direction in which a figure is placed on a coordinate plane

To rotate a figure 90 CW, negate (change the sign) X and “flip-flop”
*Repeat twice to go 180 degrees and three times to go 270 degrees
*Notice coordinates will only flip-flop when turning 90 or 270 degrees. This allows you to use the quadrant to determine signs.
