How Portion Control Works

Portion is the amount of food or drink a person consumes. The first step in succeeding in portion control is to learn your portion size. Portion control is knowing how much food you are consuming and how many calories are in that serving.

Measuring your portion size

Use measuring cups, teaspoons and tablespoons to measure your food and beverages. Also, use smaller cups, bowls, and plates when dishing out your food so you don't over eat. Don't directly pour oils into a a cooking pan or food, measure out your oils before because they have so many calories in them.

How to control your portion size when eating out

When you're out to eat, share the meal with friends or eat half of it. Ask for a salad with dressing on the side, then dip your fork into the dressing and then into the salad. Make sure you add at least a cup of low calorie vegetables to your meal. If you're having coffee, pour the low-fat milk in first to help gauge the amount used.
