Making a difference, one person at a time
The Value of Time Management
Something I've learned in my 40 years of life is that time management is actually life management. Most people that are impatient, frustrated, angry or difficult to deal with are struggling to manage life. With that as the premise, how do we model and help our kids with life management skills?
Let's first be honest. As parents we must take the responsibility for modeling to our kids. We model with our language. We model with our dress. We model with our habits. Our kids are constantly watching and learning from us.
Second, practice what you preach. If you want your child to put work before play, you will need to model this. If you want your child to value reading, you as the parent should also be reading. If you want your child to eat healthy, you as the parent should eat healthy.
Third, time and life management often comes down to being prepared. As a boy scout growing up our motto was, Be Prepared! Maybe that is why I try my best to prepare for all types of situations. Do you prepare for all types of situations?
Finally, life management often comes down to CHANGING what isn't working. For example, if you always wake up at 7am, but every day you arrive to work 5 minutes late, you probably should consider changing something in your routine. Life management is truly about making adjustments and being prepared for speed bumps along the way.

Helpful Tips for Parents...
1) The morning routine for families can be chaotic. Many students move at a slow pace in the morning and raising voices often times backfires. The goal is to set students up for success. Keep in mind that anger often times leads to stress and anxiety. As parents setting timers and encouraging kids to get ready in a upbeat fashion will help children start the day on a positive note.
2) When your child comes home in the evening try to ask different questions.
- What is one thing you did to help someone today?
- Did anything make you laugh today?
- What is one thing you learned today that you can teach me?
