BreakoutEDU
What is BreakoutEDU
BreakoutEDU challenges participants to use critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration to solve a series of clues that will help their team "break out" of traditional learning. The BreakoutEDU boxes can be purchased through the BreakoutEDU website, or you can build your own from various other sources.
BreakoutEDU Supplies
You will need to obtain a BreakoutEDU box(es) for the game you are trying to play. There are several ways to get a box or obtain the materials you need to create your own. (Not all of the vendors listed below are district approved.)
- BreakoutEDU Website
- Home Depot
- Amazon
- Staples (a list will be forthcoming)
BreakoutEDU Games
The BreakoutEDU site provides three ways to obtain different games to integrate with different content areas.
- Official Games (games have been vetted by official members of the BreakoutEDU Community)
- Sandbox Games (games have been submitted by members of the BreakoutEDU community but are not officially endorsed)
- Design Your Own Game (BreakoutEDU provides the template to create a game)
Game Prep
Each BreakoutEDU game requires different prep, not all locks, boxes, and supplies are used each time.
- Read through the entire game you would like to use.
- Print out all materials for the game.
- Gather the BreakoutEDU supplies and any others needed for the game.
- Survey your space to get an idea of where you are going to place clues and objects around the room.
- Set locks and boxes.
- Setup the room and game for play.
Game Play
Different BreakoutEDU game(s) can support a variety of content and group sizes but overall play is the same.
- Setup briefing/rules: explain to the audience the idea of BreakoutEDU (team work/problem solving/locks/breakout) and any spots that may be off limits during play
- Hint Cards: teams get two hint cards for when they get stuck on a clue
- Video: each game starts with an intro video to set the stage for the breakout
- Start the timer: you can find these via the BreakoutEDU site or YouTube
- Facilitate: unless they use the hint card let the participants struggle to problem solve the clues...just stand back and let them work
- Document: take pictures/video of the action
Breakout & Debrief
When the group or a group breaks out, make sure to celebrate and document their achievement. If time allows, consider using debriefing questions with the participants.
