Welcome Families!

Thank you for such a great response to my monthly newsletter, Reading Roundup! Each month I'll share some strategies, tips and ideas for working at home with your child on reading skills. I'll include important dates for your child's school, along with anything else I think will strengthen your child's literacy skills. My contact information is below. Please let me know if you have questions about any specific reading topic that you'd like me to address in this newsletter.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

He's Making a List & Checking It Twice!

How That Wish List Can Help Improve Literacy Skills

Although the holiday season is about a lot more than presents, gift-giving is part of many traditions. Making a wish list can be more than a chance to find out what your child wants this year. Encourage your child to make a list of their own, paying close attention to all of the sounds in each word. Even if each word isn't spelled correctly, praise your child for representing each sound in a word with a letter or letters that make sense. The more tricky combinations and patterns in spelling will come with time. Help your child organize the list using bullets, explaining how they make a list easier to read. Another way to improve literacy skills this holiday season is to look through the advertisements with your child. Read the description of each item, paying attention to how the things they want are spelled.

Greeting Cards and Your Child

Addressing greeting cards this holiday season is a great chance for your child to learn about the parts of an address, how to fill out an envelope with a return address and to learn about the differences between cities and states. Do you have relatives and friends that live in other parts of the country? Use a map to help your child locate the states and learn about directions using the compass rose.
